Michael Scot — The Long-Lived Sage

Michael Scot is a scholar, astrologer, translator and magician whose life has stretched far beyond an ordinary human span. Long periods of magical stasis and deliberate retreat from the mortal world have carried him into the present age. His reputation is so large that separating what Scot actually did from what later storytellers blamed on him is nearly impossible.

What Is Michael Scot Doing Right Now?
Scot has returned from a long period of magical withdrawal because one of his old translations has begun changing. A diagram that once described a harmless planetary conjunction now contains an extra line that no copyist remembers drawing.
Meeting the NPC
Scot is courteous to people who ask precise questions and merciless toward intellectual laziness. He does not reveal his age willingly and dislikes being treated as a legend rather than a working scholar.
Encounters
- A sealed tower attributed to Scot opens from the inside.
- A young scholar brings the party a translated page that changes whenever moonlight touches it.
- Scot hires adventurers to recover a book he deliberately hid from himself decades ago.
Appearance and Manner
Thin, severe and older than he appears at first glance, Scot wears dark scholar’s robes reinforced for travel. His hands bear ink, wax and alchemical stains, and his eyes have the exhausted focus of someone who has watched too many predictions become real.
Personality
Restless, proud and intensely curious. Scot fears ignorance more than danger, but age has taught him that knowledge can be correct and still be disastrous to use.
Relationships
John Dee: younger scholar whose ambition Scot respects and distrusts. Other magicians: often define themselves by whether they claim to understand his work. Scottish courts: value his counsel but know he serves knowledge before faction.
Equipment and Resources
- Spellbooks and translation folios
- Astrological instruments
- Alchemical apparatus
- Quarterstaff and defensive charms
- Keys to sealed libraries that do not all remain in the same place
Running This NPC at the Table
Use Scot as a source of difficult knowledge, not an automatic answer. He should explain what a phenomenon means, reveal the price of using it or point toward a lost source, leaving the adventurers to decide whether the knowledge should be acted upon.
Adventure Hooks
- The New Line: A diagram in several old manuscripts acquires the same impossible symbol overnight.
- The Closed Library: Scot needs outsiders to enter a library ward that now rejects him.
- Dee’s Question: John Dee has found a contradiction in one of Scot’s famous translations.
- The Stasis Room: Someone wakes another scholar who was meant to remain asleep for centuries.

Mythical and Historical Context
The historical Michael Scot was a Scottish translator, astrologer and scholar active during the early thirteenth century, closely associated with Arabic-to-Latin scientific translations and the court of Frederick II. His death is placed in or after the 1230s, well before this campaign’s 1454 present. The magically prolonged scholar here survives through stasis and the realm’s supernatural laws, not a claim of historical longevity. Consult the University of St Andrews biography for the historical career. His wards, ancient library and planar studies are original fantasy developments.
Historical and Literary Inspiration
Michael Scot draws on the medieval scholar, translator and legendary magician. This version treats his folkloric sorcerous reputation as genuine and gives him a magical explanation for surviving into the present age.
