Mars represents disciplined civic war and military obligation; Bellona is closer to escalation, ferocity and the dangerous heat that accompanies a declared enemy.

Battle Fever. When Bellona or a hostile creature within 30 feet deals damage, Bellona gains 10 Temporary Hit Points. This can happen once per turn.

Escalation. A creature that attacks Bellona twice in the same round has Disadvantage on Wisdom saves against her until the end of its next turn.

Divine Spellcasting

Battle Breaks Open (Recharge 5–6). Bellona creates a 60-foot-radius surge of martial frenzy. Enemies make a DC 28 Wisdom save, taking 66 (12d10) psychic damage and being unable to take the Disengage action until the end of their next turn on a failure; on success they take half damage.

Bonus Actions

Press the Attack. One ally within 60 feet may move up to half Speed and make one weapon attack as a Reaction.

Divine Estate

Regional Effects

Where Bellona’s presence is strong, a major sanctuary can project the following effects across roughly six miles. A small shrine normally manifests only one effect in a smaller area. Unless another divine power contests them, the effects fade over 1d10 days after the sanctuary is abandoned or desecrated.

Weapons Wake

Unattended weapons in a major sanctuary give a faint metallic hum when organised violence is about to begin nearby.

Battle-Fury Has a Price

A creature that willingly enters a berserk or magically enraged state gains courage but cannot easily conceal the harm it causes; witnesses remember its actions with unusual clarity.

Declarations Carry

A formal declaration of war made before Bellona cannot be secretly altered after the rite; copies reproduce the original wording exactly.

Bellona in Roman Religion

Bellona’s temple stood in the Campus Martius outside Rome’s old sacred boundary and was traditionally vowed by Appius Claudius Caecus in 296 BCE. Ancient sources connect her with the fierceness of battle and with a political zone in which foreign ambassadors and questions of triumph could be handled outside the pomerium.

That location suits her. Bellona belongs at the point where conflict ceases to be a private quarrel and becomes foreign war, public escalation or state violence.

What Is Bellona Doing Right Now?

Mercenary companies, dynastic wars and rival city-states create endless opportunities for violence to outgrow its original purpose. Bellona appears where leaders discover that they can no longer control the fury they deliberately unleashed.

She is not automatically evil. A besieged city may need ferocity to survive. But Bellona rarely asks whether violence will be easy to stop once begun.

Worship in the Campaign Present

Soldiers who expect brutal close fighting, commanders facing foreign enemies and political factions preparing for open conflict invoke Bellona. Her rites are sharper and more confrontational than those of Mars.

Some rulers fear her priests because Bellona is a poor goddess for symbolic threats. Invoking her while secretly intending to retreat can turn theatre into real war.

Domains, Spells and Divine Gifts

Bellona’s clergy favour War, Strength, Destruction and Courage themes. Suitable spells include Heroism, Spiritual Weapon, Fear, Crusader’s Mantle, Freedom of Movement, Blade Barrier and Earthquake.

Gift: Red Courage

Once per long rest, the devotee may end Frightened on themselves and immediately move up to half Speed toward a visible enemy.

Gift: Escalation Seen

The devotee can tell when a threat made in their presence is intended to trigger actual violence rather than intimidation alone.

The Red Spear

Major Divine Artifact · Weapon (spear)

Attunement: Required by a creature that has formally declared whom or what it is prepared to fight.

5.5e

The Red Spear is a +3 spear. On a hit it deals an extra 9 (2d8) Psychic damage.

Edge of War. The Spear grows warm when two organised governments, armies or factions within 10 miles are one deliberate decision away from open hostilities.

Declare the Enemy (1/Day). As a Bonus Action choose one hostile creature or military unit you can see. For 1 minute, your attacks against that target deal an extra 2d8 damage, but you cannot willingly attack another target unless the chosen target is defeated, retreats or becomes unreachable.

Pathfinder 1e

Major Artifact · CL 20th. Functions as a +5 furious spear. It warms when organised powers nearby stand on the brink of deliberate war. 1/day: designate one enemy for 10 rounds; attacks against it gain +4 morale bonus and +2d6 damage, but the bearer takes –4 on attacks against other creatures.

D&D 3.5e

Major Artifact · CL 20th. Functions as a +5 spear. 1/day: designate one enemy for 10 rounds; gain +4 morale bonus and +2d6 damage against it, with –4 on attacks against others until the designation ends.

Destroying the Red Spear

The Spear can be destroyed only when commanders on both sides of a war it has foretold freely refuse the final order to attack and use the Spear itself to mark the boundary of a lasting peace.

The Bell of the Campus

Lesser Divine Relic · Wondrous Item (bell)

When rung during an active conflict, every creature that clearly hears it knows which side committed the first deliberate act of violence that began the present engagement. It reveals the act, not whether the cause was justified.

Relationships

Mars is Bellona’s closest Roman counterpart but embodies disciplined civic war where she embodies escalation and frenzy. Jupiter concerns lawful authority; Minerva strategy; Vesta the civic continuity war can destroy.

Use Bellona Tonight

The Spear Is Already Red

A peace delegation discovers Bellona’s ceremonial spear is warm and blood-red before negotiations begin.

The Foreign Envoy Cannot Leave

A delegation outside the city boundary finds every road blocked by soldiers who insist they received no orders.

Fury Without an Enemy

A victorious army returns home unable to stop fighting, and Mars’s priests say the problem now belongs to Bellona.

Historical Sources and Rules Compatibility

Historical cult material is separated from campaign invention. The 5.5e block respects SRD 5.2.1 numeric ceilings; the higher Campaign Divine Tier is setting-only. Pathfinder 1e deity mechanics are explicitly a campaign epic extension. D&D 3.5e uses divine-rank structure.

Rules licensing. D&D 5.5e terminology derived from the System Reference Document 5.2.1 is used under CC BY 4.0 where applicable. Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e deity statistics on this page are original campaign conversions rather than official published deity stat blocks.
