Haumia-tiketike — Atua of Wild and Uncultivated Foods

Māori tradition · Wild foods · Aruhe · Bracken · Gathering · Survival
Haumia-tiketike is the atua of wild and uncultivated foods. Where Rongo governs the planted garden, Haumia belongs to food gathered from the land itself—especially aruhe, the edible root of bracken fern.

Worship in the Living World
Haumia belongs to the food gathered rather than planted. Te Ara identifies him with uncultivated foods, including bracken fern and its edible root, aruhe. That makes knowledge central to his sphere: where food grows, when it can be taken, how it must be prepared and how a gathering place survives repeated use.
His worship is especially relevant when gardens fail, travellers are cut off from supplies or communities are displaced from stored food. Haumia’s answer is rarely luxury. It is survival through knowledge of what the land already provides.
Mythic Identity
Creation genealogies place Haumia among the children of Ranginui and Papatūānuku and identify him with uncultivated foods. In traditions recorded by Te Ara, Tūmatauenga later defeats Haumia’s domain by digging up wild foods from the earth.
Regional whakapapa also connect Haumia with bracken spores and insect life, reinforcing the sense that his world is a dense web of food, habitat and creatures rather than a cleanly bounded “plant” portfolio.
Pantheon Plane: Hawaiki and Ossa
The islands of Hawaiki contain remembered gathering grounds as well as gardens. Some islands are reached only by travellers who can recognise food and shelter without cultivated fields, while Ossa carries voyagers between places where survival knowledge changes from island to island.
Haumia’s pantheon connection does not turn Hawaiki into wilderness. His sphere exists wherever cultivated certainty ends and people must read the land directly.
What Is Haumia-tiketike Doing Now?
Bracken has begun appearing overnight along routes used by refugees, stranded travellers and failed harvest parties. The roots are unusually large and nourishing—but only where no one has tried to fence or claim the patch.
At the same time, insects gather in precise lines pointing toward forgotten food sites. Some guides call it a blessing. Others fear that Haumia is teaching people to survive somewhere they are about to be forced to go.
Domain Spells and Divine Gifts
Suggested 5.5e domains: Nature, Life. PF1e / 3.5e domains: Plant, Earth, Community, Travel.

Divine Relic — Te Kō o Haumia
The Digging Stick of Haumia is an original game relic that can identify edible roots beneath natural ground. Once per day it can reveal enough wild food for ten creatures. Once per week, striking the earth with it creates a safe, concealed camp with food and fresh water for one night.
Regional Effects
- Food Reveals Itself. Skilled foragers have advantage on checks to find natural food.
- Burnt Ground Recovers. Bracken and pioneer plants return unusually quickly after natural fire or disturbance.
- Claims Do Not Take Root. Attempts to fence a sacred gathering ground repeatedly fail through mundane but persistent natural causes.
Relationships
Rongo-mā-Tāne: the complementary atua of cultivated food; garden and gathering ground answer different needs.
Tūmatauenga: the brother whose mythic victory explains human ability to dig up and use Haumia’s foods.
Rūaumoko: earth movement can bury gathering grounds but also expose new soils and roots.
