Chih-Nii (Zhinü) — Celestial Weaver and Goddess of Love

Chinese Pantheon · Intermediate Deity · Weaving, skill, love, fidelity and the Qixi stars
Zhinü — also preserved on older pages as Chih-Nii — is the celestial Weaver Girl of Vega: a divine craftswoman whose yearly reunion with Niulang across the Milky Way binds weaving, longing, fidelity and practiced skill to the seventh night of the seventh lunar month.

Worship in the Present World
Zhinü is honoured by weavers, embroiderers, textile workers, young women, lovers and anyone whose livelihood depends on patient hand-skill. Qixi rites ask not only for romance but for dexterity, ingenuity and the ability to turn repeated practice into beautiful work. Offerings of fruit, flowers, tea and carefully made objects are more fitting than ostentatious wealth.
Her worship reaches its height on Qixi. Women gather beneath the night sky, look toward Vega and test or display their skill with needlework and other crafts. In the campaign present, guilds of weavers and silk-workers also treat the night as a professional holy day: a time to honour masters, apprentices and the invisible chain by which difficult knowledge passes from one pair of hands to another.
Divine Mechanics
Campaign Divine Tier 33 describes Zhinü’s setting-scale power and is not an official SRD challenge rating. These statistics present the deity herself. Her mechanics focus on divine craft, stellar thread, binding, protection and the creation of paths across otherwise impossible separation.

Traits
Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Zhinü fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Zhinü has Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.
Perfect Weaver. Zhinü automatically succeeds on checks to weave, sew, knot, mend or identify textile workmanship unless opposed by an artifact or deity-scale effect.
Thread Between Stars. Difficult terrain, gaps and vertical surfaces do not impede Zhinü. She may treat open air as solid ground while moving, leaving faint threads of starlight that vanish at the end of her turn.
Divine Spellcasting
Charisma is Zhinü’s spellcasting ability (spell save DC 30, +22 to hit with spell attacks). The 2024 rules do not provide an official cleric subclass for weaving or romantic fidelity, so the site’s Craft, Charm and Community domains are explicit campaign adaptations where those rules are used. Signature spells include mending, calm emotions, fabricate, greater restoration, wall of force, teleport, plane shift and gate.
Actions
Multiattack. Zhinü makes three Stellar Thread attacks.
Stellar Thread. Ranged Spell Attack: +22 to hit, range 240 ft. Hit: 40 (6d8 + 13) force and radiant damage. Zhinü may pull the target up to 20 feet toward a point she can see.
Celestial Loom (Recharge 5–6). Zhinü weaves luminous threads through a 60-foot cube within 180 feet. Hostile creatures make a DC 30 Dexterity save, taking 54 (12d8) force damage and becoming restrained for 1 minute on a failure. A restrained creature repeats the save at the end of each turn. Allies chosen by Zhinü gain three-quarters cover while inside the woven field.
Magpie Bridge (Recharge 6). Zhinü creates a bridge of celestial light between two spaces she can see within 300 feet. Until the start of her next turn, allies may move instantly from one end to the other by spending 10 feet of movement. The bridge can cross planar or extradimensional boundaries only when both ends are already within the same plane.
Unbroken Bond (3/Day). One creature within 120 feet ends one charmed, frightened or restrained condition and may immediately move up to its Speed toward a creature or place it is devoted to without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Legendary Actions
- Shuttle Step. Zhinü moves up to half her Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
- Thread. Zhinü makes one Stellar Thread attack.
- Mend What Was Torn (Costs 2). One ally, object or structure within 60 feet regains 35 Hit Points or is repaired by an equivalent amount.

Celestial Loom (Su). Every 1d4 rounds Zhinü fills a 60-foot cube within 180 feet with divine thread. Reflex DC 39 negates entanglement; creatures that fail are entangled and anchored against teleportation until they escape. The threads have hardness 20 and 60 hit points per 5-foot section.
Bridge Across the River (Su). Three times per day Zhinü creates a two-way teleportation bridge between two points within 300 feet for 1 round. Willing creatures may pass without provoking attacks of opportunity.
Master Weaver (Ex). Zhinü may take 20 on Craft checks involving weaving, textiles, knotwork or garment construction without increasing the time required.
Spell-Like Abilities
At will—calm emotions, fabricate, greater dispel magic, mending, sending; 3/day—greater restoration, greater teleport, wall of force; 1/day—gate, miracle, plane shift. Caster level 27th; save DCs are Charisma-based.
Domain Access
Zhinü has full campaign access to Craft, Charm and Community domain powers. Love, fidelity and celestial weaving remain portfolio themes where an edition has no matching formal domain.

Divine rules. Divine Rank applies to attacks, saves, checks and armour as normal for an intermediate deity. Portfolio spell-like abilities function at caster level 23rd.
Salient Divine Abilities
Alter Reality, Create Object, Divine Dodge, Divine Inspiration, Divine Skill Focus (weaving), Gift of Life, Master Crafter, Rejuvenation and Supreme Initiative are natural expressions of Zhinü’s rank and portfolio, supplemented by additional rank-appropriate abilities.
Portfolio Spell-Like Abilities
Zhinü can use the spell-like abilities granted by Craft, Charm and Community at divine caster level. Effects that mend, weave, bind or bridge separation are treated as native portfolio powers rather than generic class features.
Defeat and Return
Destroying Zhinü’s active divine body does not extinguish Vega or end Qixi. Outside her divine seat she can reform through a consecrated loom, stellar shrine or Qixi rite unless her divine rank is separately overcome.
Divine Powers, Domains and Sacred Implements
Craft
Craft is Zhinü’s clearest portfolio expression: skilled making, textile work, patient practice and the transmission of difficult hand-knowledge.
Charm
Charm reflects affection, longing and personal bonds, but Zhinü’s story is not reduced to romance alone.
Community
Community expresses family, shared labour and the human networks that keep craft traditions alive.
Stars and Separation
Vega, Altair, the Milky Way and the magpie bridge are sacred cosmological themes even where no formal domain corresponds to them.
The Heavenly Loom
Zhinü’s loom is a divine instrument of pattern and creation rather than an adventuring treasure chest. Cloth woven upon it can carry celestial maps, vows or protections within its pattern. A loose thread can reveal where a relationship has been severed; a completed garment may bind together what ordinary travel cannot reach.
The Shuttle
The shuttle is the simplest and most recognisable emblem of her work. Consecrated shuttles are carried by weaving guilds and master artisans as signs of practiced skill. The deity’s own shuttle is an implement of cosmic craft, not a dagger with a new name.
Behaviour, Relationships and Divine Politics
Zhinü values skill that has been earned, promises that survive separation and love that does not erase duty. Her myths hold those values in tension rather than resolving them neatly. She understands longing, but she also knows what happens when the order of Heaven, family obligation and private desire collide.
Niulang is the Cowherd associated with Altair across the Celestial River. Their yearly reunion is the heart of Qixi. The campaign follows the tradition in which Zhinü belongs to the celestial household of the Jade Emperor, while recognising that historical and regional versions assign the separating authority differently. Xiwangmu appears in some later tellings as the powerful heavenly figure who enforces the separation.
Where Worship Is Found
Zhinü’s worship is inseparable from Qixi traditions across China. The seventh night of the seventh lunar month links ritual, star-gazing, women’s craft skill and the story of Vega and Altair. Customs vary by region, but seeking ingenuity and dexterity from the Weaver Girl is older and broader than the modern shorthand of calling Qixi only a lovers’ festival.
Weaving towns, silk-producing districts, craft guilds and household shrines provide her most natural sacred geography. A temple need not be enormous to matter: one loom used by several generations of masters can become as significant as a grand hall.
Omens, Cults and Adventure Use
Signs of Favour
A tangled skein loosens without breaking; Vega appears through impossible cloud; a novice’s hands suddenly understand a technique they have practiced for years.
Signs of Warning
Threads snap only when a particular name is spoken; every loom in a town stops at once; magpies gather on rooftops weeks before Qixi.
Broken Bridge
The yearly celestial crossing fails, and the disruption begins affecting mortal roads, marriages and magical travel below.
Stolen Pattern
A guild has stolen a sacred weaving design and claims divine favour because the cloth is perfect, forcing the characters to separate skill from rightful ownership.
Adventure Hooks
- On Qixi, Vega vanishes while Altair remains visible, and every diviner gives a different explanation.
- A length of celestial silk arrives unfinished, with the final pattern pointing toward a hidden prisoner.
- Magpies begin building a bridge between two rooftops in a city where two rival families have forbidden a marriage.
- A master weaver dies leaving one impossible garment unfinished; each apprentice sees a different final pattern in the cloth.
Mythological and Historical Context

The Weaver Girl is identified with Vega and the Cowherd with Altair, separated by the Milky Way. Their story developed through many variants over centuries. The Met’s Qixi painting describes the festival as the annual reunion of the cowherd and weaver maiden on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, when a flock of magpies forms a bridge across the sky.
Qixi also preserves traditions of women seeking skill and ingenuity. Beijing’s official cultural guide describes needle-threading, craft competitions and worship of the Weaver Girl alongside the romantic legend. The 1504 painting by Zhang Ling presents Zhinü holding a shuttle and gazing through mist, a Chinese image directly tied to the Vega/Altair story.
