In Asia Minor, the Seljuq sultanate of Rum suffered a destructive invasion by the orcs and quickly fragmented. It was succeeded by numerous Turkish military chiefdoms on the Byzantine frontier. Osman established one such frontier power in a leading position; his successors captured Nicaea and Nicomedia, annexed much of north-west Anatolia and later crossed into south-eastern Europe and the Balkans.
The growth of the Ottoman state was interrupted by defeat at Ankara at the hands of the human conqueror Timur, but the Ottoman sultans soon re-established control and reorganised their forces around a powerful palace army. By 1454 Mehmed II remains an ambitious Ottoman ruler, but Constantinople is not his conquest in this setting: the hobgoblin Ninefold Dominion seized the city in 1453 and occupies it in the campaign present. The Ottoman state and the Dominion remain separate sovereign powers, even where mercenaries, artillery crews or siege specialists cross political boundaries.
