Giant Toad

Giant Toad
My Images (midjourney.com)

Appearance: The Giant Toad, a colossal amphibian of extraordinary proportions, stands as a marvel in the wetlands. With a mottled green and brown hide, warty skin, and expressive golden eyes, it exudes both regality and an ancient, primeval charm. Its immense mouth opens like a cavern, revealing a long, sticky tongue ready to snatch prey. The toad’s size, often reaching 10 feet in diameter, adds an imposing presence to its marshy domain.

Behavior: A master of patience, the Giant Toad spends much of its time partially submerged, awaiting the opportune moment to strike. It moves with surprising agility despite its bulk, leaping great distances to ensnare prey. Known for its distinctive croaking calls, the Giant Toad communicates with others of its kind during mating season, creating a symphony that echoes through the wetlands.

Habitat: The Giant Toad thrives in lush, humid environments such as swamps, marshes, and tropical rainforests. It gravitates towards secluded ponds and slow-moving rivers where it can lie in wait for unsuspecting prey. During mating season, the toads congregate near water sources, creating a temporary chorus that resonates through the wetland landscapes.

Modus Operandi: Utilizing its exceptional camouflage and stealth, the Giant Toad patiently lurks beneath the water’s surface. When prey ventures too close, it springs into action with a powerful leap, capturing its target with the flick of its sticky tongue. The prey is then swallowed whole, often before it can react. The Giant Toad’s patient approach and sudden bursts of speed make it a formidable ambush predator.

Motivation: The motivation of the Giant Toad revolves around survival, procreation, and maintaining the delicate balance of the wetland ecosystem. During the mating season, its motivation intensifies, driving it to seek out potential mates and establish territories. The toad’s existence is intertwined with the rhythm of the wetlands, where it serves as both predator and prey, contributing to the intricate dance of life in its verdant habitat.

Amphibious. The Giant Toad can breathe in air and water.

Standing Leap. The Giant Toad’s long jump is up to 20 feet and its high jump is up to 10 feet, with or without a running start.

Swallow. If the toad successfully grapples a Medium or smaller creature with its tongue attack, that creature is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the toad, and it takes 10 (3d6) acid damage at the start of each of the toad’s turns. If the toad takes 20 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the toad must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the swallowed creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the toad.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage.

Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: The target is grappled (escape DC 12) if it is a Medium or smaller creature, and the toad can’t use its tongue on another target until the grapple ends. The target is restrained, and the toad can’t make tongue attacks against other targets.

Swallow. The Giant Toad makes one bite attack against a Medium or smaller target it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends.

Reactions

Spit. If a creature the Giant Toad can see within 10 feet of it hits it with a melee attack, the toad can use its reaction to spit at the attacker. The attacker must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 5 (2d4) poison damage and be poisoned until the end of its next turn.

Stubby warts dot the skin of this horse-sized brown toad. Its throat bulges and ripples as though about to croak.

Most giant toads live in dryer areas after maturing, returning to the water only to mate and give birth.
