Fons, also called Fontus, is the Roman god of springs, wells and fresh water sources. His cult belongs to the source itself: water emerging from the earth before engineers channel it elsewhere.

Regional Effects
Where Fons’s presence is strong, a major sanctuary can project the following effects across roughly six miles. A small shrine normally manifests only one effect in a smaller area. Unless another divine power contests them, the effects fade over 1d10 days after the sanctuary is abandoned or desecrated.
Springs Stay Sweet
Natural springs and properly maintained wells resist ordinary contamination and develop an obvious taste or colour if deliberately poisoned.
Water Can Be Found
Those searching for groundwater hear faint echoes or feel sudden coolness when a viable spring or aquifer lies nearby.
Fountains Restore
A creature that drinks clean water from a consecrated fountain after a Short Rest gains Advantage on its next save against fatigue, poison or disease.
Fons in Roman Religion
Roman evidence preserves an altar of Fontus or Fons on the Janiculum and a shrine dedicated in 231 BCE near the Porta Fontinalis. The Fontinalia honoured springs and water sources on 13 October.
Fons is not the sea and not the engineered aqueduct. He is the sacred origin point where drinkable water emerges from ground or well.
What Is Fons Doing Right Now?
Growing towns need more water than old wells can provide. Fons becomes active when communities drain springs, contaminate sources or discover that a new water supply belongs to an older sacred landscape.
His cult is often the first to notice magical poisoning because priests know how the water tasted before anyone thought to test it.
Worship in the Campaign Present
Well-keepers, water carriers, rural settlements and people responsible for fountains honour Fons.
Garlands and offerings at springs survive because water sources remain life-and-death infrastructure even where aqueducts exist.
Domains, Spells and Divine Gifts
Fons’s clergy favour Water, Life and Protection themes. Suitable spells include Create or Destroy Water, Purify Food and Drink, Lesser Restoration, Control Water, Greater Restoration and Heal.
Gift: Find Fresh Water
The devotee can sense the nearest natural fresh-water source within 1 mile if it is not magically concealed.
Gift: Pure Cup
Once per long rest, the devotee can purify enough mundane water for twenty people.
Artifacts and Relics
The Fontinal Cup
Major Divine Artifact · Wondrous Item (cup)
Attunement: None.
5.5e
Silver Warning. Water placed in the Cup flashes silver if it contains poison, disease-causing contamination or a harmful alchemical substance.
Purify the Draught (3/Day). Up to 1 gallon of liquid in the Cup is cleansed of mundane poison and disease.
Spring’s Renewal (1/Day). A creature drinking clean water from the Cup regains 4d8 + 8 Hit Points and can repeat one saving throw against Poisoned or a disease with Advantage.
Pathfinder 1e
Major Artifact · CL 18th. Harmful contamination turns water silver. 3/day: purify food and drink on up to 1 gallon; 1/day: drinking from it grants cure critical wounds and a new save against poison or disease with +4 sacred bonus.
D&D 3.5e
Major Artifact · CL 18th. Contaminated water turns silver. 3/day: purify up to 1 gallon; 1/day: a drinker receives cure critical wounds and a new save against poison or disease with +4 sacred bonus.
Destroying the Cup
The Cup can be destroyed only when a keeper knowingly serves poisoned water from it to a community that trusts the vessel and refuses every chance to warn them before the first victim drinks.
The Janiculum Reed
Lesser Divine Relic · Wondrous Item (reed)
Held loosely outdoors, the Reed bends toward the nearest natural underground spring within 1 mile. It does not point toward wells filled from cisterns or artificial reservoirs. In PF1e and 3.5e it grants +4 on Survival checks made to locate natural water.
Relationships
Juturna governs a famous healing spring; Neptune water on the broadest and most dangerous scale; Cloacina civic drainage. Fons is the source of clean fresh water itself.
