Mercury is the Roman god of merchants, travellers, exchange, messages and quick intelligence. Roman ritual makes trade central to his identity: goods, money, language and people are all things that move, and Mercury governs the cleverness required to move them successfully.
Same Deity, Different Cultural Aspect
Mercury is the Roman aspect of Hermes: one god expressed through particularly Roman concerns with merchants, exchange, travel and the movement of messages. The Hermes page presents the Hellenic aspect. Both pages remain separate and self-canonical because they describe different cults and cultural presentations, not different cosmic beings.
Divine Mechanics
Campaign Divine Tier 34 describes Mercury’s setting-scale power and is not an SRD challenge rating. The rules-facing 5.5e block stays within SRD 5.2.1 CR 30 and ability-score-30 ceilings.

Mercury in Roman Religion
Ovid’s account of Mercury’s May festival places merchants at the centre of the god’s Roman worship. Sellers burn incense, ask for profit and carry sacred water from Mercury’s well near the Porta Capena, sprinkling both themselves and the goods that will soon change owners.
That ritual captures Mercury’s Roman centre of gravity: circulation. Goods change hands, travellers cross distances, messages move between strangers and clever speech makes agreements possible. The Hermes identification adds broader messenger and trickster mythology, but trade remains unmistakably Roman.
What Is Mercury Doing Right Now?
Long-distance trade, banking, courier networks and maritime exchange are expanding the number of people who depend on strangers keeping promises. Mercury thrives in that friction.
He is unusually active around bills of exchange, coded messages, diplomatic couriers, smuggling routes and markets where mundane trade overlaps magical or planar goods. His priests tend to be multilingual, mobile and difficult to surprise.
Worship in the Campaign Present
Merchant fraternities, caravan masters, couriers and innkeepers maintain Mercury shrines along roads and in market districts. Small offerings before a difficult negotiation are more common than grand public sacrifice.
His clergy are not guardians of perfect honesty. They care about real exchange, understood terms, wit and movement. Fraud that destroys the market itself is more likely to offend Mercury than sharp bargaining between people who know they are bargaining.
Domains, Spells and Divine Gifts
Mercury’s clergy favour Travel, Trickery, Knowledge and Commerce themes. Suitable spells include Longstrider, Comprehend Languages, Misty Step, Suggestion, Sending, Freedom of Movement, Dimension Door, Teleport and Plane Shift.
Gift: Fair Weight
The devotee always knows whether a scale, coin, measure or written account has been deliberately falsified.
Gift: One More Mile
Once per long rest, the devotee and up to five companions ignore Difficult Terrain and travel fatigue for 1 hour.
Relics
The Caduceus Ledger
A contract written in this book by all willing parties cannot be altered without every original signer knowing immediately.
The Sandals of the Last Courier
They carry a messenger along any physically passable road at impossible speed, but only while bearing a message the courier has not read.
Relationships
Janus governs the threshold itself; Mercury governs the person, message or bargain passing through it. Portunus overlaps at harbours and gateways, while Venus shares Mercury’s interest in attraction, persuasion and profitable connection.
Use Mercury Tonight
The Coin That Returns
Every coin spent in one market returns to the same merchant by dawn.
The Courier Arrives Yesterday
A messenger carries a treaty signed tomorrow and Mercury’s seal proves the document is genuine.
The Empty Caravan
A caravan reaches its destination with all goods intact but every merchant missing, while the ledgers show every debt settled.
Divine Estate and Regional Effects
Where Mercury’s presence is strong, a major sanctuary can project the following effects across roughly six miles. A small shrine normally manifests only one effect within a much smaller area. Unless another divine power contests them, the effects fade over 1d10 days after the sanctuary is abandoned, desecrated or deliberately renounces the deity’s protection.
Roads Favour the Moving
Travellers following an honest route make noticeably better time; mundane delays caused only by confusion or poor directions are halved.
Markets Expose Bad Faith
Counterfeit weights, hidden substitutions and deliberately false prices become easier to spot; checks made to detect commercial fraud gain Advantage.
Messages Seek Their Recipient
A correctly addressed mundane message carried in good faith is unusually hard to lose and tends to pass into the hands of someone able to move it onward.

Historical Sources and Rules Compatibility
- Ovid, Fasti V — Mercury’s May festival, merchants and the water near the Porta Capena
Historical cult material is separated from campaign invention. The 5.5e block respects SRD 5.2.1 numeric ceilings; the higher Campaign Divine Tier is setting-only. Pathfinder 1e deity mechanics are explicitly a campaign epic extension. D&D 3.5e uses divine-rank structure.
Rules licensing. D&D 5.5e terminology derived from the System Reference Document 5.2.1 is used under CC BY 4.0 where applicable. Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e deity statistics on this page are original campaign conversions rather than official published deity stat blocks.
