Lono — Hawaiian Akua of Rain, Growth and Makahiki

Lono — Hawaiian Akua of Rain, Growth and Makahiki

Lono, Hawaiian god of rain, harvest and Makahiki, carrying a ceremonial staff above a fertile island valley beneath rain clouds and sunlight

Hawaiian tradition · Rain · Agriculture · Growth · Abundance · Peace · Makahiki

Lono brings the rain that feeds the fields and the season when warfare gives way to harvest, contest and celebration. Across the islands, his arrival is marked by cloud, fertile soil and the demands of Makahiki: food must be grown, gifts shared and peace honoured while the season lasts.

Traits

Divine Rank 14. Lono is an intermediate deity on the campaign deity scale. His divine effects count as artifact-level magic.

Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Lono fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. Lono has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Makahiki Peace. A creature of Lono’s choice within 120 feet that begins its turn without making a hostile attack gains 15 temporary hit points and Advantage on its next Wisdom saving throw before the start of its next turn.

Rain Brings Growth. Natural rain within 1 mile of Lono nourishes crops, suppresses mundane wildfire and does not spoil harvested food.

Signs in the Sky. Lono cannot be surprised while outdoors and knows the next 24 hours of natural weather within 10 miles.

Actions

Multiattack. Lono makes three Staff of Rain attacks.

Staff of Rain. Melee Weapon Attack: +20 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 10) Bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) Thunder damage. The staff is a +3 divine weapon; its enhancement is included in the attack and damage modifiers.

Rain of Abundance (Recharge 5–6). A 90-foot-radius rain falls within 180 feet. Allies of Lono’s choice regain 30 hit points; hostile creatures make a DC 30 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) Thunder damage and having their Speed halved until the end of their next turn on a failure, or half damage without the Speed reduction on a success.

Cease the War (1/Day). Creatures of Lono’s choice within 180 feet make a DC 29 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature cannot willingly make a weapon attack against another affected creature for 1 minute. It repeats the save whenever it takes damage.

Reactions

Turn Strife Aside. When a creature Lono can see within 60 feet hits another creature, Lono reduces the damage by 30 and may move either creature up to 15 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

Legendary Actions

Lono can take 3 Legendary Actions, one at a time at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Rain Step. Lono moves up to half his Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
  • Staff Strike. Lono makes one Staff of Rain attack.
  • Nourish. One ally within 60 feet regains 20 hit points.
  • Rainbow Sign (Costs 2). One ally within 60 feet adds 1d10 to its next D20 Test.

Mythic Trait

Makahiki Returns. The first time Lono reaches 0 hit points, he instead regains 325 hit points. Warm rain begins in a 300-foot radius, hostile ongoing fire effects end unless divine, and every ally of Lono’s choice gains 30 temporary hit points.

Cleric Domain and Domain Spells

Life Domain (2024). Lono’s priests concerned with harvest, healing and public welfare may follow the published 2024 Life Domain. Its domain spells, always prepared at the relevant cleric levels, are 3rd cleric level: Aid, Bless, Cure Wounds and Lesser Restoration; 5th: Mass Healing Word and Revivify; 7th: Aura of Life and Death Ward; 9th: Greater Restoration and Mass Cure Wounds. Lono’s own rain and peace actions above are divine abilities, not additional player spells or subclass powers.

Encounter use: A Staff of Rain strike averages 46 damage. Lono’s melee attack bonus includes Strength +7, extrapolated epic proficiency +10 and the weapon’s +3 enhancement. His rain uses Wisdom for the DC 30 Constitution saving throw; Cease the War uses Charisma for DC 29. These numbers exceed the standard published 2024 monster CR range and should be treated as unique deity statistics.

Traits

Divine Rank 14. Lono is an intermediate deity whose personal abilities exceed mortal spellcasting. The divine rank describes his position in the campaign, not a published 2014 monster subtype.

Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Lono fails a saving throw, he may choose to succeed instead. Magic Resistance. Lono has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Makahiki Peace. When a creature Lono chooses within 120 feet begins its turn and has made no hostile attack since the end of its previous turn, it gains 15 temporary hit points and has advantage on the next Wisdom saving throw it makes before the start of its next turn. The benefit does not stack with other temporary hit points.

Rain Brings Growth. Rain naturally falling within 1 mile of Lono nourishes crops and dampens mundane wildfire; this does not extinguish a magical fire or overrule the local weather in a continent-wide area.

Actions

Multiattack. Lono makes three Staff of Rain attacks.

Staff of Rain. Melee Weapon Attack: +20 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) thunder damage. The +3 divine enhancement is already included in the attack and damage bonus.

Rain of Abundance (Recharge 5–6). Rain falls in a 90-foot-radius area centred at a point within 180 feet that Lono can see. His chosen allies in the area regain 30 hit points. His chosen enemies make a DC 30 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) thunder damage and having their speed halved until the end of their next turn on a failure, or half damage without speed reduction on success.

Cease the War (1/Day). Creatures of Lono’s choice within 180 feet make DC 29 Wisdom saving throws. On a failure a creature cannot willingly make a weapon attack against another creature affected by this power for 1 minute. The restriction ends early for a creature if it succeeds on a repeated save made each time it takes damage; the effect does not otherwise control movement or speech.

Innate Spellcasting. Wisdom is Lono’s spellcasting ability (save DC 30; spell attack +22). He requires no material components except costly components specifically demanded by a spell. At will: Plant Growth, Sanctuary; 3/day each: Control Weather, Heal, Heroes’ Feast; 1/day: Divination. Casting times, concentration, duration and ranges follow the individual spells.

Reaction

Turn Strife Aside. When a creature Lono can see within 60 feet hits another creature, Lono reduces the damage by 30 and may move either participant up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. He cannot move a creature into a known damaging hazard.

Legendary Actions

Lono can take three legendary actions at the end of other creatures’ turns, regaining all spent uses at the start of his turn: Rain Step (1), move half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks; Staff Strike (1), make one Staff of Rain attack; Nourish (1), one ally within 60 feet regains 20 hit points; Rainbow Sign (2), one ally within 60 feet gains 1d10 to its next ability check, attack roll or saving throw before the end of its next turn.

Divine Turning Point

Makahiki Returns (1/Day). The first time Lono would drop to 0 hit points, he instead recovers 325 hit points. Warm rain falls in a 300-foot radius; non-divine ongoing fire effects in that radius cease, and every ally he chooses within 120 feet gains 30 temporary hit points. This happens immediately, without taking his action or reaction.

Cleric Domain and Domain Spells

Nature Domain (2014). Lono’s clergy may choose the published Nature Domain, which grants the following fixed spells at their normal cleric levels: 1st: Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals; 3rd: Barkskin, Spike Growth; 5th: Plant Growth, Wind Wall; 7th: Dominate Beast, Grasping Vine; 9th: Insect Plague, Tree Stride. Lono himself uses the deity statistics above; clerics receive only the normal domain features and spell-slot progression unless separately blessed.

Divine and Mythic Abilities

Makahiki Peace (Su). Allies within 60 feet gain a +4 sacred bonus on saves against fear and compulsion. A creature that begins its turn without having made a hostile attack since its last turn gains fast healing 10 until the start of its next turn.

Rain of Abundance (Su). Every 1d4 rounds Lono calls a 90-foot-radius rain within 180 feet. Allies regain 30 hit points; hostile creatures take 8d8 thunder damage and have their speed halved for 1 round. Fortitude DC 44 halves the damage and negates the speed reduction.

Cease the War (Su) 1/day. Creatures of Lono’s choice within 180 feet must succeed at a DC 43 Will save or become unable to willingly attack another affected creature for 10 rounds. Taking damage grants a new save.

Mythic Saving Throws. A successful saving throw negates an effect that would normally have a reduced effect on a success.

Makahiki Returns (Ex) 1/day. When reduced to 0 hit points, Lono may expend 3 uses of mythic power to remain at 1 hit point, remove one condition affecting him and begin a warm rain that grants allies within 120 feet 30 temporary hit points.

Worship in the Living World

Lono is associated with agriculture, rain and abundance. University of Hawaiʻi material describes heiau dedicated to him for rain, plentiful crops and health, and identifies clouds, rain, rainbows, sweet potato, gourds and pigs among his signs or bodily forms.

His clearest playable institution is Makahiki: a season in which Lono’s image travels through districts, tribute is offered, warfare ceases and games are played. That makes Lono unusually easy to use as both a deity and a campaign calendar.

Mythic Identity

Lono is one of the great Hawaiian akua. The National Park Service describes him as associated with agriculture, growth, fertility, natural weather phenomena, wisdom, healing, music and peace. Makahiki links those ideas to an annual social rhythm rather than leaving them as abstract divine portfolios.

There are also multiple named Lono figures and forms in Hawaiian traditions; this page presents Lono in the broad sense.

Pantheon Plane: Hawaiki and Ossa

Hawaiki — The Ancestral Isles lies within Ossa — The Living and Remembering Sea in Arborea. For the Hawaiian gods, this is a wider pantheon nexus of ancestry, voyaging and remembered homelands rather than a claim that every akua permanently resides there.

Each deity keeps its own Hawaiian places, forms and relationships. Hawaiki provides the shared planar road; it does not flatten those traditions into one court.

What Is Lono Doing Now?

Makahiki rains have begun falling in places far outside their expected season. Wherever they fall, old disputes become strangely difficult to continue: warriors miss appointments, messengers arrive early and games break out in marketplaces.

But one district receives no rain at all. Its Lono image has disappeared from the annual route.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

Suggested 5.5e domains: Life, Nature, Peace, Tempest. PF1e / 3.5e domains: Community, Plant, Weather, Good.

1st: bless, sanctuary · 2nd: aid · 3rd: plant growth · 4th: divination · 5th: greater restoration · 6th: heroes’ feast, heal · 7th: regenerate · 8th: control weather · 9th: mass heal.

Campaign Relic — Akua Loa of the Road

An original game relic inspired by the travelling Lono image of Makahiki. While carried openly, it gives advantage on checks to negotiate safe passage and peaceful tribute. Once per season it can establish a one-day truce across a settlement; deliberate violence during that truce immediately ends the blessing for the aggressor.

Regional Effects

  • Rain Falls Where Needed. Natural rain favours stressed crops before already-saturated ground.
  • Games Replace Quarrels. Communities under Lono’s favour are more willing to settle low-level disputes through contests.
  • Harvest Is Counted. Concealed stores and unfair tribute become harder to hide during Makahiki observance.

Relationships

Kū: Makahiki peace provides a ritual counterpoint to warfare and governance.

Kamapuaʻa: Lono appears in Kamapuaʻa traditions, linking rain, pigs, fertility and contested landscapes.

Kāne and Kanaloa: with Kū, part of the major group of Hawaiian akua represented at heiau.
