Compel a Tiny animal to travel to a designated spot. It cannot be an animal tamed or trained by someone else, including a familiar or animal companion. Lure it with suitable food and mentally convey a place you know well or an obvious landmark; give simple directions, since the animal relies on your knowledge.
You can attach a small item or note. The animal travels to the destination and waits until the duration expires, then resumes normal activities. While it waits, others may approach and remove its scroll or token. The recipient gains no special ability to communicate with the animal or understand an unfamiliar written language.

Animal Messenger — D&D 3.5e
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level Bard 2, Druid 2, Ranger 1
Components V, S, M
Casting Time 1 standard action
Range Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target One Tiny animal
Duration One day/level
Saving Throw None; see text
Spell Resistance Yes
You compel a Tiny animal to go to a spot you designate. The most common use for this spell is to get an animal to carry a message to your allies. The animal cannot be one tamed or trained by someone else, including such creatures as familiars and animal companions.
Using some type of food desirable to the animal as a lure, you call the animal to you. It advances and awaits your bidding. You can mentally impress on the animal a certain place well known to you or an obvious landmark. The directions must be simple, because the animal depends on your knowledge and can’t find a destination on its own. You can attach some small item or note to the messenger. The animal then goes to the designated location and waits there until the duration of the spell expires, whereupon it resumes its normal activities.
During this period of waiting, the messenger allows others to approach it and remove any scroll or token it carries. The intended recipient gains no special ability to communicate with the animal or read any attached message (if it’s written in a language he or she doesn’t know, for example).
Material Component A morsel of food the animal likes.

What Changed
The 2024 spell adds a Charisma save and restricts successful messengers to Tiny Beasts with CR 0. The 2014 spell requires a Tiny beast but gives no save. Both modern versions deliver a spoken message of up to 25 words, and higher slots extend the travel time.
Pathfinder and 3.5 instead send a Tiny animal to wait at a landmark with a physical note or token. Neither grants the recipient animal speech or automatic translation. Pathfinder takes 1 minute to cast; 3.5 takes a standard action.
Practical Use
Give a recognisable destination. Modern casters must have visited the location. In the older rules, use a familiar place or obvious landmark and simple directions.
Plan the journey. A flying modern messenger can cover about 50 miles in a day; a ground messenger covers about 25. In Pathfinder and 3.5, agree on travel time from the chosen animal and route rather than importing those modern distances.
Keep the message useful. A warning, meeting point, or request for help suits the modern word limit. In the older editions, choose a note the recipient can read and a token they can recognise.
