Divination • The Unbroken Gaze
Ardent Gaze

This spell draws on the power of Aphrodite to follow the subject with your eyes, no matter the obstacles.
Ardent Gaze at a Glance
Legacy access: Beauty domain 5. Casting: 1 standard action. Initial range: Long, 400 feet + 40 feet per caster level. Subject: one creature perceived when casting. Duration: 1 hour per caster level. Defence: no save; spell resistance applies.
The subject remains visible through darkness, concealment and illusions while within the caster’s normal visual reach. The spell does not reveal a transformed creature’s true form.
Spell Rules by Edition
Ardent Gaze — D&D 5.5e / 2024
Historical third-party spell. Ardent Gaze is not supplied as a spell in SRD 5.2.1. No 2024 conversion is supplied here. Its older caster-level, saving-throw and action rules do not transfer automatically to this edition.
Ardent Gaze — D&D 5e / 2014
Historical third-party spell. Ardent Gaze is not supplied as a spell in SRD 5.1. No 2014 conversion is supplied here. Use the earlier-edition rules only in their own system, or an explicitly approved conversion.
Ardent Gaze — Pathfinder 1e
Edition status: No Pathfinder 1e conversion is supplied. The historical d20 spell does not become a Pathfinder spell merely because its terminology looks familiar.
Ardent Gaze — D&D 3.5e
Historical third-party 3.5e spell: Relics & Rituals: Olympus (2004). Beauty 5 is the publication’s domain access, not a fifth-edition spell list.
Divination
Level: Beauty 5
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 feet + 40 ft./level)
Target: One creature
Duration: 1 hour/level
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: Yes
At the time of casting, you nominate one creature that you can perceive in some way. While this spell is in effect, you can see the subject clearly, regardless of distance, cover, lighting, or even illusions, as long as he or she is within the range of your normal vision. This spell does not allow you to see the true form of polymorphed, changed or transmuted creatures, but it does allow you to see the exact location of creatures under blur or displacement effects and see through illusions or invisibility. Thus, even if the subject is invisible, at the edge of your vision, in total darkness and partially behind a boulder, you can see him easily.
What Changed Between Editions?
The preserved mechanics belong to a historical third-party 3.5e publication. No 2024, 2014 or Pathfinder conversion is supplied. Long range governs the initial subject choice; the continuing effect remains limited by the text’s reference to normal vision. This is not an unlimited scrying link.
Uses and Tactics
Choose the subject before a crowd, darkness or an illusion makes recognition difficult. A court magician can keep a watched envoy in sight; an investigator can follow a fleeing suspect through visual confusion. The spell gives information, not control: the subject does not become charmed, willing to cooperate or easy to strike through a solid wall.
Use it to track the creature itself. The appearance of its equipment, companions and route does not become a complete map of every hidden thing nearby.
Worked Example: The Disguised Messenger
The caster perceives a messenger and casts Ardent Gaze within Long range. The messenger later becomes invisible behind a column within normal visual reach. The caster can still see the subject’s location. The column still blocks a physical arrow. If the messenger is polymorphed, the spell follows that subject but does not show its original body.
Counterplay and Games Master Rulings
Spell resistance can prevent the effect. Appropriate dispelling can end the ongoing spell, and travelling beyond the caster’s normal visual reach removes the benefit while that separation lasts. Do not assume that losing sight permanently ends the spell: its text gives a duration, not an automatic termination clause.
Seeing the subject does not remove physical cover or grant line of effect for attacks and other spells. The caster must perceive a particular creature at the time of casting; a name or unsupported suspicion is not automatically enough.
Compare Dispel Magic and Arcane Sight, which reveals auras rather than following one chosen creature.
Mythical Context
The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite tells of the goddess approaching Anchises in a mortal guise. Appearance and recognition are central to the encounter. Ardent Gaze draws on Aphrodite’s power to keep one person visible; that is a fantasy interpretation of divine attention, not a claim that the hymn describes this spell. See Hymn 5 in the Theoi Classical Texts Library.
Horus’s falcon imagery and restored eye link vision to divine authority, giving Ardent Gaze a fitting mythical analogy. See the Metropolitan Museum’s Wedjat eye account.
Historical Context
A Greek bronze mirror of about 350 BCE in the Metropolitan Museum depicts Aphrodite and Eros. It supplies a surviving connection between the goddess and an object of looking and appearance. It does not document supernatural tracking. See the museum’s mirror record.
Ancient Egyptian eye amulets were used as symbols of recovery and protection. Their survival documents the belief, not the supernatural power to see hidden creatures. See the Ptolemaic gold amulet.
