Rhino Hide

Rhinoceros illustration representing Rhino Hide armour

Rhino Hide turns a charge into a devastating impact in Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5e. Neither 5e ruleset uses Rhino Hide as a core SRD magic item, so its 3.x charge bonus should not be silently imported into modern play.

5.5e / 2024

No direct core SRD item under this name. A 2024 conversion should define its AC bonus and any charge-triggered extra damage using the current movement and attack rules. Do not import a +2 enhancement bonus, armour check penalty or automatic 2d6 charge rider.

5e / 2014

No direct core SRD item under this name. A 2014 conversion should be built as a specific magic Hide Armour item and state any charge requirement and bonus damage explicitly.

Why Rhino Hide Matters

Rhino Hide rewards commitment. Its wearer gets the signature benefit only by charging, so the item pushes the character toward decisive movement and aggressive positioning rather than static defence.

Run It at the Table

  • Charge first: the extra 2d6 damage applies when the wearer succeeds on a charge attack.
  • Mounted charges count: the legacy item explicitly works with mounted charging.
  • Do not add the damage to ordinary attacks: without the charge requirement, it is simply +2 hide armour.
  • 5e conversion: define the movement requirement and extra damage using the chosen 5e edition’s movement and attack rules.

Encounter Use

Rhino Hide works well on an enemy champion whose tactics are obvious before the charge lands. That gives players a chance to break the line, control movement or force the wearer into cramped ground where the item’s signature attack becomes harder to set up.
