Hungary is ruled by the young Ladislaus V, but royal title and practical power are not the same thing. Great magnates, fortified counties and experienced commanders retain enormous influence, while John Hunyadi remains the kingdom’s foremost military figure even though his formal regency has ended. Mining wealth, Danube trade and southern fortresses make the kingdom rich enough to matter and divided enough to be difficult to command.

The fall of Constantinople has transformed the southern strategic picture. The hobgoblin Ninefold Dominion now occupies the city and pushes its own campaigns into the region, while the Ottoman human state remains a separate power with different rulers and interests. Hunyadi’s experience against southern armies makes him indispensable to nobles who do not otherwise agree on much.
