Trapper — The Living Dungeon Floor

The intelligent adult female lurking ray: a living floor that remembers every texture around it, creates bait and folds upward around prey.
The Trapper is the adult female of the Lurking Ray family and the most intelligent stage of its life cycle. A mature trapper can imitate natural stone, worked flagstones, moss, dust and even raised objects well enough to turn an entire section of floor into one patient predator.
At a Glance
Run It Tonight
Put something worth examining in the centre of the trapper: a chest-shaped bulge, scattered coins, a dropped weapon or the remains of an earlier expedition. The floor should provide subtle clues before the attack—muffled footsteps, dust that does not move naturally, stone texture that repeats too perfectly—so careful play can defeat the ambush.

Traits
Amorphous Body. The trapper can move through openings much smaller than its normal space and is difficult to pin down by ordinary anatomy.
False Floor. While motionless and spread across a floor, wall or ceiling, the trapper is indistinguishable from surrounding stone unless a creature examining it succeeds on a DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Perception) check.
Sensory Memory. The trapper has Advantage on checks made to imitate the texture, colour and ambient sound of a place it has occupied for at least 1 hour.
Smother. A creature Grappled by the trapper is also Restrained, Blinded, cannot speak or use Verbal spell components, and begins suffocating if it needs to breathe.
Actions
Multiattack. The trapper makes one Slam attack and uses Envelop.
Slam. Melee Attack Roll: +10, reach 10 ft. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) Bludgeoning damage.
Envelop. Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 16, each creature of the trapper’s choice standing on or within 5 feet of it. Failure: The creature is Grappled (escape DC 17), Restrained and subject to Smother. The trapper can hold up to four Medium creatures or equivalent smaller creatures.
Crushing Fold. Each creature Grappled by the trapper takes 24 (3d10 + 7) Bludgeoning damage.
This is an original 2024 compatibility adaptation of the open Pathfinder Trapper, not an official SRD 5.2.1 monster.

This 3.5e block is a compatibility conversion of the open Pathfinder lurking-ray chassis rather than an official 3.5 SRD monster.
Behaviour
Unlike the nearly mindless male lurker above, a trapper is genuinely intelligent. Much of that intelligence is devoted to sensory memory: she remembers textures, smells, noises and movement patterns well enough to reproduce them as camouflage. What remains is still enough for planning, bargaining and choosing prey.
A trapper may deliberately leave treasure visible on her back, imitate the sound of ordinary footsteps or maintain a long-term arrangement with nearby underground inhabitants. She is not tame; she simply understands profitable relationships.
Signs Before Initiative
- Footsteps sound slightly muffled across one patch of apparently identical stone.
- Dust lies in convincing patterns but shifts as one connected sheet.
- A chest or loose treasure sits suspiciously close to the centre of an otherwise empty room.
- Previous victims’ equipment is present while their bodies are completely gone.
- Faint warm air or digestive odour leaks from cracks that should be solid stone.
- Ambient noises repeat too precisely because the trapper is imitating remembered sound.
If Violence Starts
The trapper tries to envelop several creatures at once. It waits until prey stands well inside its body outline, then folds upward and seals them beneath itself. Once it has good captures, it constricts rather than abandoning the grapple to chase anyone outside.
Because the trapper is intelligent, it can recognise obvious rescue attempts, choose when to reveal itself and retreat before a hopeless fight. That is a major difference from the old page’s claim that it acted only by instinct.
Counterplay
Test the floor before walking onto it. Poles, thrown stones, summoned creatures and careful inspection can expose a trapper without placing a character in the centre of its body. Bright light is uncomfortable in the PF tradition and can make concealment harder.
Once the trap springs, slashing and piercing attacks are especially valuable in PF1e because they bypass its damage reduction. Freeing smothered characters quickly matters more than chasing raw damage.
Nursery Behaviour
A mature female may shelter 20–30 young Executioner’s Hoods beneath her body. She feeds them partly digested matter and gradually introduces live prey as they mature. The underside of a nursery trapper is therefore a warm, wet, tentacle-filled chamber rather than empty space.
Lures and Bargains
The trapper’s ability to manipulate surface texture makes a simple “treasure baiter” less a special mutation than a natural expression of its intelligence. It can shape bumps that resemble boxes, sacks or other useful objects and can remember enough ambient sound to support the deception.
Some underground communities bargain with trappers, providing food in exchange for guarding an approach. Such arrangements are always temporary and should be treated as diplomacy with an intelligent predator, not animal training.
Using a Trapper in an Encounter
The perfect floor. One section of ancient masonry looks better preserved than the rest because it is not masonry at all.
The nursery room. A trapper has settled across the only route into a chamber containing dozens of juvenile hoods beneath her body.
The treasure chest. The “chest” is a raised fold of living tissue, positioned precisely where a curious adventurer must step onto the centre of the trapper.
The paid guardian. An underground settlement has fed the same trapper for years. Its enemies discover the arrangement and stop the food supply.
