Katherine Ferrers — The Wicked Lady

Katherine Ferrers — The Wicked Lady

By day Katherine Ferrers is a young noblewoman trapped inside estate duty; by night a masked rider turns the roads into somewhere she controls.

Katherine Ferrers has been translated directly into the campaign as a fifteenth-century noblewoman whose estate is rich in appearance and poor in usable coin. Pressure from debts, inheritance disputes and a suffocating household pushes her toward a second identity: the Wicked Lady, a masked road robber who targets wealthy travellers and sometimes uses information only a noble household should possess.

Masked Identity. Katherine has advantage on Charisma (Deception) checks to hide her name while suitably disguised, except against a creature with reliable evidence of who she is.

Ride the Night. After a weapon attack while mounted she may use her bonus action to direct her mount to move up to half its speed, without provoking opportunity attacks from the target of the attack.

Estate Knowledge. Katherine has advantage on Intelligence (History) and Wisdom (Survival) checks concerning local roads, heraldry and households she has personally studied.

Multiattack. Katherine makes two rapier attacks or one light crossbow attack; the crossbow’s loading property applies.

Rapier. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage.

Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage.

Unmask the Traveller (Recharge 5–6). Katherine chooses one creature within 30 feet that can hear her and knows she is armed. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.

Original 2014 literary-legend adaptation. Her suspected highway robbery is not historically proven; existing 2024/PF1e/3.5e rules and the campaign’s hooks remain intact.

What Is Katherine Ferrers Doing Right Now?

Katherine is using robbery income to keep parts of her estate solvent without revealing how close the household is to financial collapse. A steward has begun noticing that stolen coin and paid debts rise together.

At the same time, another robber has adopted the Wicked Lady’s mask and committed a killing she did not order. Katherine needs the imitator stopped without exposing herself.

Encounters

  • The party is robbed by a masked rider who knows one character’s noble connection.
  • A servant finds mud and horsehair on a cloak that should never leave the estate.
  • Katherine hires the party openly to hunt the Wicked Lady.
  • A rival robber murders a traveller under her name.

Personality, Appearance and Manner

Proud, restless, intelligent and exhilarated by choosing an identity no guardian or steward controls. She can be generous to dependants and ruthless toward wealthy travellers she regards as exploitative.

Her public dress is appropriate to a noble household; the Wicked Lady uses a dark riding cloak, half-mask, light armour and unmarked tack.

Relationships and Influence

  • Household steward: loyal but increasingly suspicious of irregular finances.
  • Road outlaws: Rann, MacLaine and Plunkett know the masked rider by reputation, not necessarily identity.
  • Local tenants: some quietly benefit from money whose source they do not ask about.
  • Creditors: the pressure that keeps drawing Katherine back onto the road.

Equipment and Possessions

  • Fast riding horse
  • Dark cloak and half-mask
  • Arming sword and light crossbow
  • Noble seals and estate keys
  • Hidden cache of stolen coin and jewellery

Using This NPC at the Table

Katherine uses mobility, darkness and social misdirection. If unmasked she tries to convert a combat problem into a political one, relying on the enormous difference between accusing a road robber and accusing a noblewoman.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Second Wicked Lady: a murderer copies her identity.
  • The Estate Ledger: impossible payments reveal the double life.
  • The Noble Hunt: Katherine publicly sponsors the search for herself.
  • The Tenant’s Secret: a family knows who she is because she quietly paid their rent.
  • The Mask at Court: someone sends Katherine her own mask with a demand for service.

Mythical and Historical Context

Katherine Ferrers (1634–1660) was a historical English heiress. The claim that she was the highway robber called the “Wicked Lady” belongs to later legend and is not established as fact. Both her real dates and the subsequent literary retellings are later than 1454. This campaign’s masked rider is therefore a fictional counterpart, not the documented woman. The biographical overview separates the woman from the attributed stories. The disguise, routes and encounters are original fantasy episodes.

Sources and Adaptation

Inspired by the legend associated with Katherine Ferrers, deliberately relocated into the campaign era so the Wicked Lady can be encountered as an active noble outlaw rather than a later ghost or future figure.
