Xochiquetzal — Flower-Quetzal, Lady of Beauty, Fertility and Craft

Xochiquetzal, Flower-Quetzal, Nahua goddess of flowers, fertility, beauty, maternity and textile craft
Xochiquetzal embodies flowering life: beauty that reproduces, craft that transforms fibre into splendour, and fertility that is both bodily and agricultural.

Nahua tradition · Flowers · Fertility · Beauty · Maternity · Weaving · Earth and rain

Xochiquetzal—“Flower-Quetzal”—is a young Nahua goddess of flowering fertility, beauty, maternity and skilled making. Archaeological interpretation at Xochitecatl connects her with fertility, maternity, rainmaking and textile work, while other traditions place her in myths of earth, plants, flowers and generation. She is therefore more useful in play as a power of living abundance and craft than as a generic “love goddess.”

Traits

Divine Resistance (4/Day). If Xochiquetzal fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Living Pattern. At the start of Xochiquetzal’s turn, one 20-foot square of ground within 120 feet blossoms, becoming difficult terrain for enemies and granting half cover to allies until the start of her next turn.

Beauty Without Compulsion. Allies within 120 feet have advantage on saves against being Charmed, and magical effects created by Xochiquetzal cannot force a creature to love, desire or consent.

Hands of the Weaver. Xochiquetzal can create mundane cloth, cord, flowers or simple craft materials at will, to a maximum of 50 pounds at a time.

Divine Spellcasting

Charisma is her spellcasting ability (spell save DC 33, +25 to hit).

At will: charm monster, entangle, plant growth, sanctuary.

3/day each: greater restoration, heal, wall of thorns, heroes’ feast.

1/day each: mass heal, regenerate, shapechange.

Actions

Multiattack. Xochiquetzal makes three Flower-Thread attacks.

Flower-Thread. Ranged Spell Attack: +25 to hit, range 240 ft.; Hit: 68 (8d8 radiant plus 8d8 force) damage, and Xochiquetzal may pull the target up to 20 feet.

Loom of Living Earth (Recharge 5–6). A 60-foot square within 180 feet fills with flowering cords. Hostile creatures make a DC 33 Strength save or become Restrained, while allies in the area gain 30 temporary hit points.

Rain on the Flowers (1/Day). Warm rain falls in a 120-foot radius for 1 minute. Allies starting their turn there regain 20 hit points; natural plants revive, seeds germinate, and nonmagical flames are extinguished.

Legendary Actions

  • Petal Step. Teleport up to 60 feet to a space containing a plant, textile or flower.
  • Flower-Thread (Costs 2). Make one Flower-Thread attack.
  • Cut the Snare (Costs 2). End one Grappled, Restrained or Charmed condition affecting an ally within 60 feet.
  • Pattern of Shelter (Costs 3). Up to three allies within 120 feet gain +3 AC until the start of Xochiquetzal’s next turn.

Mythic Trait — The Garden Flowers Again

Once per encounter at 0 hit points, Xochiquetzal dissolves into petals and returns with 395 hit points. Every ally within 120 feet regains 40 hit points, and a ring of flowering difficult terrain for enemies fills the same radius for 1 minute.

Worship in the Living World

Archaeological work at Xochitecatl links Xochiquetzal and Tlazoltéotl to fertility, maternity and rainmaking, and the same ritual contexts contain large numbers of spindle whorls associated with textile work. Other Nahua traditions connect Xochiquetzal to earth, flowers, vegetation and generation.

Her worship therefore belongs in workshops and gardens as readily as in courtly displays of beauty. A finished textile is stored labour, family knowledge, colour, trade value and social identity woven into one object.

Mythic Identity

Xochiquetzal represents abundance that has taken form: not merely raw fertility, but flowers, woven patterns, ornament and bodies brought safely through pregnancy. Beauty is not frivolous in this framework. It is evidence that a community has enough skill, time and continuity to make more than bare survival.

Divine Realm — House of Flowering Threads

This campaign estate is a vast garden crossed by looms. Threads run between trees, irrigation channels and terraces, and every finished pattern becomes a living bed of flowers somewhere else in the realm. Rain falls only where it is needed.

What Is Xochiquetzal Doing Now?

Famine attacks more than stomachs. Dyers lose pigments, weaving households sell tools, pregnant people go hungry, and families sacrifice heirloom cloth for food. Xochiquetzal is preserving the skills and relationships that scarcity can destroy long before a population recovers.

Her priests are organising communal weaving, exchanging finished cloth for grain and using damaged textiles rather than irreplaceable ritual pieces whenever possible. Midwives report flowers blooming overnight beside homes where malnourished mothers are in danger. Xochiquetzal’s current command is not “remain beautiful.” It is do not let hunger erase the knowledge required to live beautifully again.

Divine Relic — Loom of Returning Flowers

This original game relic is a portable backstrap loom that can restore damaged nonmagical cloth while preserving its original pattern. Once per month it can weave a single protective mantle granting its wearer advantage or a +4 sacred bonus on the next saving throw against disease, fear or exhaustion.

Regional Effects

  • Broken Thread Shows the Way. A snapped thread in a favoured workshop curls toward the person who last handled it.
  • Flowers Mark Safe Water. Small blossoms appear beside drinkable water sources during drought.
  • Craft Survives Fire. One tool from a destroyed workshop is always found usable unless the destruction was deliberately sacrilegious.

Relationships

Tlazoltéotl: overlapping concerns with fertility, maternity and feminine ritual, but Xochiquetzal emphasises flowering life and craft while Tlazoltéotl governs impurity and purification.

Tlāloc: rainmaking and agricultural fertility connect their cults, especially during the present drought.
