Dark Altar Stone
At a Glance
A Dark Altar Stone is a slab of black granite made for a legacy evil ritual site. When incorporated into an altar, it can hold a single captured soul through magic derived from Trap the Soul.
Legacy Rules
If the stone is used as an altar or forms part of one, it can be commanded to absorb the soul of a victim sacrificed upon that altar. The soul is stored as though trapped in a gem by Trap the Soul. The stone can hold only one soul at a time.
- Caster Level: 17th.
- Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item and Trap the Soul.
- Market Price: 150,000 gp.
- Weight: 100 lb.
Adventure Use
The stone is difficult to move and therefore works best as part of a fixed location: a forbidden shrine, ruined stronghold or ritual chamber. Adventurers who find one may have to determine whether it is empty, contains a trapped soul, or remains part of a functioning magical site.
Edition Note
This page preserves a D&D 3.5e-era magic item. Its soul-trapping mechanics should not be assumed to function identically in later editions without a deliberate conversion.
