Herald of the Sea Domain

Neptune and Minerva in dispute, representing the divine authority of the Herald of the Sea
The Dispute of Minerva and Neptune, René-Antoine Houasse.

The Herald of the Sea Domain is the sacred domain of the Herald of the Sea prestige class, granting authority over water creatures and a transformation-heavy spell progression. It comes from the d20-era third-party source Relics & Rituals: Olympus and should be treated as prestige-class material rather than a normal core Cleric domain.

Edition Applicability

The published Herald of the Sea Domain belongs to the d20-era Herald of the Sea prestige class. Its granted power explicitly refers to Herald of the Sea class levels and to characters who already possess the ability to command water creatures. It is therefore not treated as a normal domain choice for every Cleric.

Pathfinder 1e and modern D&D do not receive invented same-named rules panels here. Characters using those editions should use their edition’s own class and domain options unless a separately labelled adaptation is introduced.

Rules status: third-party prestige-domain material from Relics & Rituals: Olympus.

Granted Power

The herald may rebuke, command or bolster water creatures in the same manner that an evil Cleric rebukes undead. This ability can be used a total number of times per day equal to 3 + the character’s Charisma modifier.

If the character already possessed the ability to command water creatures before entering the prestige class, Herald of the Sea levels stack with the relevant Cleric levels for the purpose of rebuking, commanding or bolstering water creatures.

How the Herald of the Sea Domain Plays

The granted power gives the herald direct supernatural authority over creatures of the water. The spell progression is less narrowly aquatic than its name suggests: it begins with size and supernatural movement, then becomes increasingly concerned with transformation before culminating in Shapechange. Earthquake reflects the destructive aspect of a sea god such as Poseidon as Earth-Shaker.

That unusual progression is intentional to the published source and is preserved rather than replaced with a more obvious list of water spells.

The Prestige Class Connection

This domain belongs beside the Herald of the Sea prestige class. Heralds are divine agents of ocean powers who speak prophecy, survive in the sea and carry the temperament of their patron into mortal affairs. The domain’s stacking rule matters most for characters who already possess elemental-command abilities before entering the prestige class.

Who Grants the Herald of the Sea Domain?

Poseidon is the clearest Hellenic patron for the source prestige class. In a wider campaign, another established sea deity may sponsor a herald where that relationship fits the deity’s existing portfolio and priesthood. The domain should not be assigned to every water-associated power automatically.

What Are Heralds of the Sea Doing Now?

Heralds carry warnings from sea gods, negotiate with intelligent water creatures, investigate coastlines disturbed by supernatural earthquakes and appear at ports where divine anger is about to become a mortal disaster. A herald may arrive as an ally bearing a prophecy, or as the first sign that an offended ocean power has already judged a city.
