Power Word Blind Spell – Word of Darkness

A single word leaves no wound and throws no flame. The victim simply reaches for a world that has vanished.

Power Word Blind is feared because it gives almost no warning. There is no ray to dodge and no elaborate gesture to read. The caster speaks, sight collapses, and the usefulness of the spell depends on exactly how badly its victim has already been hurt.

SpiralWorlds Conversion

Power Word Blind

Level 7 Enchantment

Casting Time Action
Range 60 feet
Components V
Duration Instantaneous
Initial Save None

Choose one creature you can see within range.

If the target has 200 Hit Points or fewer, it gains the Blinded condition.

At the end of each of its turns, the blinded target makes a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC, ending the condition on itself on a success.

If the target has more than 200 Hit Points, it instead has Disadvantage on attack rolls until the start of your next turn.

Design intent. This conversion keeps the traditional 200-Hit-Point identity while following the modern power-word pattern: no initial saving throw, a strong effect below the threshold, and a weaker result when the target is above it.

Rules authority: Power Word Blind does not appear in System Reference Document 5.2.1. This panel is a SpiralWorlds conversion rather than official SRD rules.

The conversion uses the current structure of Power Word Stun as its design reference.

Source-Faithful Rules

Power Word Blind

Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]

Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V
Range Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target One creature with 200 hp or less
Duration See text
Saving Throw None
Spell Resistance Yes

You speak a single word of power and cause the chosen creature to become blinded. The creature does not need to hear the word.

The duration is determined by the creature’s current hit points when the spell takes effect. A creature with 201 or more current hit points is unaffected.

Current Hit Points Blindness Duration
50 or fewer Permanent
51–100 1d4+1 minutes
101–200 1d4+1 rounds
201 or more Unaffected

Mythic Power Word Blind

When casting the mythic version, treat the target’s current hit-point total as though it were lower by 5 × your mythic tier when determining which effect category applies.

You can also target a creature whose hit points would normally put it beyond the spell’s limit. Instead of full blindness, that creature treats all opponents as though they have concealment, imposing a 20% miss chance, for 1d4 rounds.

Augmented (3rd tier)

If you expend two uses of mythic power, the word’s magic lingers until the beginning of your next turn. If damage during that time reduces the target into a lower hit-point category, the spell immediately improves to the new category.

Healing afterward does not reduce or shorten the effect already established by the spell.

War Domain: Power Word Blind forms the seventh-level step of the classic War Domain progression, followed by Power Word Stun and Power Word Kill.

At the Table: Hit Points Are the Real Target

Power Word Blind becomes much stronger when the caster stops thinking of the enemy as simply “healthy” or “injured” and starts thinking in thresholds.

A wounded enemy sitting just above a breakpoint may be worth damaging before the word is spoken. Moving a target from 101 hit points to 100 changes a brief combat effect into minutes of blindness. Pushing a creature from 51 hit points to 50 turns the same spell into a permanent condition.

Enemy State Best Approach Why It Matters
Above 200 hp Damage first The source-faithful spell cannot fully affect the target yet.
101–200 hp Use for immediate combat control Even a few rounds of lost sight can decide a dangerous fight.
51–100 hp Excellent capture or escape window Minutes of blindness usually outlast the encounter.
50 hp or fewer Use when lasting removal matters The blindness becomes permanent until cured or otherwise removed.

This makes coordinated damage especially valuable. A fighter, archer, summoned creature, or damaging spell can push an enemy across the next breakpoint immediately before Power Word Blind is cast.

Common Rulings

Does the target have to hear the word?

PF1e / 3.5e No. The spell explicitly works whether the target can hear the word or not. The caster still needs to provide the spell’s verbal component.

Is there an initial saving throw?

PF1e / 3.5e No. Spell Resistance still applies. If the spell penetrates resistance and the target is within the required hit-point band, the blindness takes effect.

When are the target’s hit points checked?

Check the creature’s current hit points when the spell resolves. Damage dealt before the casting can therefore move the creature into a stronger duration category.

Does healing afterward shorten the blindness?

No. Once the duration has been established, later healing does not continually recalculate the spell. The Mythic version expressly reinforces this by stating that regaining hit points does not diminish the established effect.

Can permanent blindness be cured?

Yes. Remove Blindness/Deafness can cure blindness whether its cause is normal or magical. “Permanent” means the spell has no ordinary time limit, not that the condition is impossible to remove.

Countering Power Word Blind

The best defence is often preventing the caster from reaching the decisive moment. The legacy spell offers no saving throw, so relying on a strong Fortitude or Will save does nothing once the spell is successfully cast.

  • Keep hit points high. Remaining above the spell’s effective threshold can prevent the full effect.
  • Spell Resistance matters. It is one of the principal direct defences in the source-faithful rules.
  • Stop the verbal component. The victim need not hear the word, but the caster still has to speak it.
  • Carry magical restoration. Access to Remove Blindness/Deafness can turn a permanent result into a temporary crisis.
  • Break line and targeting opportunities. Denying a hostile caster a clean target is often safer than trusting defensive numbers.
Important distinction: deafening the intended victim does not protect it from the source-faithful spell. Preventing the caster from completing the verbal component is the relevant defence.

Words of Power in History and Myth

There is no historical evidence for a spoken formula that literally blinded an enemy on command, but the idea that particular names, sounds, or secret utterances carried supernatural force has deep roots.

Greek and Roman magical traditions preserve inscribed curses and ritual formulae intended to bind, harm, compel, or invoke supernatural powers. The British Museum preserves a Roman-period curse tablet from Cyprus inscribed with a magical text, one of many surviving objects showing how words could be treated as active ritual instruments rather than simple descriptions.

The Greco-Egyptian magical papyri take the idea still further. Some rituals use unusual divine names and strings of sounds that practitioners regarded as intrinsically powerful. Harvard’s Center for the Study of World Religions discusses these ritual utterances in its examination of the Stele of Ieu , where the practitioner recites extraordinary names as part of an attempt to speak and act with divine authority.

Power Word Blind turns that ancient magical intuition into fantasy fact: the correct word is not a description of the curse. The word is the act.

Power Word Blind in Mythic Earth

In 1454, learned magicians sometimes call the incantation the Word of Darkness. It appears in expensive spellbooks, guarded university collections, princely libraries, and the private manuals of court sorcerers who understand that a single spoken syllable can accomplish what a squad of assassins may not.

Its political value is obvious. A commander who cannot see cannot read banners or maps. A magistrate cannot examine a seal. An archer cannot identify a target. A duellist loses the certainty on which timing depends. In a council chamber, siege tower, guild hall, chancery, or mercenary command tent, sudden blindness can change authority before anyone draws steel.

The spell therefore attracts restrictions wherever rulers believe they can enforce them. Courts may forbid unknown magicians from approaching a prince closely enough to speak. Guards watch hands, but experienced warders also watch mouths. Important negotiations may place suspected spellcasters behind screens, at measured distances, or under magical supervision.

Among scholars of natural philosophy, the spell remains deeply unsettling because its force is difficult to reduce to ordinary correspondences. There is no projectile to trace and no visible substance crossing the room. The victim is simply subjected to a command embedded in magical speech, as though reality itself recognises the word before the listener does.
