Emotion

Expressive painted figures representing the Emotion spell

Emotion fills a group with powerful hope or deep discouragement. The preserved version modifies attacks, saves, skill checks and weapon damage for every affected creature in the same direction.

Status: no core 2014 spell by this name.

Emotion — D&D 3.x Legacy

Use the preserved broad morale/despair rules below.

D&D 3.x Legacy Rules

School Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level Moon 4
Components V, S
Casting Time 1 standard action
Range Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets One living creature/level, no two more than 30 ft. apart
Duration 1 minute/level
Saving Throw Will negates
Spell Resistance Yes

Choose one emotional direction for all targets. A hopeful effect grants +2 morale on saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks and weapon damage rolls. The opposite effect imposes –2 on the same rolls.

What Changed?

  • D&D 3.x Legacy: Emotion is a single broad morale/despair spell affecting several roll types at once.
  • Pathfinder 1e: later rules split emotional effects across separate spells and conditions rather than using this archive form.
  • 5.5e / 2024 and 5e / 2014: there is no official spell by this name; use edition-specific charm, fear and morale magic instead.

Edition Boundary

Later d20 and fifth-edition rules split this broad concept into separate spells and conditions. Do not treat this archive version as the universal modern Emotion spell.

Counterplay

Because the legacy spell is mind-affecting, creatures immune to mind-affecting effects are unaffected. Dispel Magic and Counterspell use the normal rules of the edition being played.

Using Emotion in Play

Emotion is a group morale spell. The hopeful form supports allies before a difficult exchange; the discouraging form weakens a group without directly controlling individual actions. Its strength comes from affecting several rolls at once rather than forcing a specific behaviour.

Related Magic

  • Calm Emotions — suppresses strong emotion rather than amplifying it.
  • Fear — a dedicated fear effect in later rules.
  • Haste — compare with later-edition party buffs that improve performance without using the old morale package.

Rules Sources and Licensing

This page preserves an older d20/OGL form for legacy play. Modern rules remain edition-specific.
