Animated Shield

An Animated Shield protects its bearer while leaving both hands free. It exists in both 5e rulesets and in Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5e, but the activation timing and duration differ sharply by edition.

5.5e / 2024

Animated Shield is a Very Rare shield that requires Attunement. While holding it, the wielder can take a Bonus Action to animate it. The shield hovers in the wielder’s space and protects them as though they were wielding it, leaving both hands free. It remains animate for 1 minute, until the wielder takes a Bonus Action to end the effect, or until the wielder dies or has the Incapacitated condition.

The item’s rarity does not add an extra +1, +2 or +3 AC bonus; it provides the normal shield protection while freeing the hands.

5e / 2014

Animated Shield is a Very Rare shield that requires attunement. While holding it, the wielder can speak its command word as a bonus action, causing it to hover in their space and protect them as if wielded while leaving both hands free. The effect lasts for 1 minute, until ended with a bonus action, or until the wielder is incapacitated or dies.

Pathfinder 1E

Price: +2 bonus · Aura: strong transmutation · CL: 12th.

As a move action, the wielder can loose the shield to defend on its own for 4 rounds. During that time it continues to grant its shield bonus and passive shield properties, follows the wielder’s space and movement, and leaves both hands free. It cannot activate shield abilities that themselves require an action. After the effect ends the shield drops, and once retrieved it cannot be animated again for 4 rounds. This property cannot be placed on a tower shield.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, animate objects; cost uses the +2 bonus equivalent.

D&D 3.5e

Price: +2 bonus · Aura: strong transmutation · CL: 12th.

Upon command, the shield floats close to the wielder and protects them as though they were using it, freeing both hands. Only one shield can protect a character at a time, and normal shield-use penalties such as armour check penalty, arcane spell failure and nonproficiency still apply.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, animate objects.

Why Animated Shield Matters

The defining benefit is not a larger shield bonus. It is action economy and hand economy: the bearer keeps the shield’s protection while freeing both hands for a weapon, spellcasting, climbing, carrying an object or another task that would normally conflict with wielding a shield.

Run It at the Table

  • 5e: activation is temporary. Track the 1-minute duration and remember that the shield returns to ordinary use when the effect ends.
  • Pathfinder 1E: the 4-round animation window and 4-round recovery period are part of the property. Do not replace them with the 3.5e timing.
  • D&D 3.5e: normal shield penalties and limitations still matter even though the shield is floating.
  • One shield at a time: animation does not create a loophole for stacking several shield bonuses.

Treasure and Character Use

Animated Shield is especially valuable to characters whose fighting style already consumes both hands. It can turn a shield from an equipment compromise into a permanent part of a character’s defensive identity.

As treasure, it also has immediate visual appeal: a shield that pulls itself free and takes position beside its bearer is easy to recognise as something exceptional before anyone knows the numbers.
