Dwarven Plate

Heavy dwarven plate armour

Dwarven Plate is heavy defensive armour in every supported edition, but its mechanics diverge sharply. Modern 5e versions are Very Rare magic armour that improves AC and resists forced movement; Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5e use a nonmagical adamantine full plate that grants damage reduction.

Why Dwarven Plate Matters

Dwarven Plate is built for a character whose job is to hold ground. In 5e, its two strengths reinforce that role directly: a substantial AC bonus and a reaction that reduces involuntary movement along the ground. In the 3.x systems, its identity is different but points toward the same battlefield function: heavy adamantine armour that absorbs part of incoming physical damage.

Run It at the Table

  • 2024: the item may be Half-Plate Armor or Plate Armor. Keep that broader base-armour choice separate from the 2014 version.
  • 2014: the core item is Plate. When the wearer is moved against their will along the ground, the reaction reduces that movement by up to 10 feet.
  • Movement limit: the 5e reaction is about forced movement along the ground. It is not a general defence against teleportation, falling or every effect that changes position.
  • 3.x: use DR 3/— and the normal adamantine/full-plate rules rather than importing the 5e AC bonus or movement reaction.

Treasure and World Use

Dwarven Plate should feel like equipment made for siege lines, gate fighting, shield walls and commanders who cannot afford to be displaced. It is a strong reward for characters who prefer dependable defence over activated powers.

A suit can also carry visible history: maker’s marks, repairs from old breaches, clan or guild ownership marks, and inscriptions recording the campaigns in which it held the line.
