Wild Armour or Shield

Wild armour is designed for shapeshifters, preserving defensive magic while the wearer changes form. The named Wild property is a Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5e ability; 5e Wild Shape uses its own equipment rules instead.

Property Wild
Purpose Preserves armour or shield protection during Wild Shape in 3.x
5e status No direct core Wild armour property
Pathfinder / 3.5e +3-equivalent property
Best for Druids and other characters whose combat form changes their equipment

5.5e / 2024

No direct core SRD Wild armour property. Use the 2024 Druid and Wild Shape rules for equipment and transformed statistics. A custom magic item intended to function during Wild Shape must state that benefit explicitly; do not import the 3.x +3 bonus-equivalent property.

5e / 2014

No direct core SRD Wild armour property. The 2014 Wild Shape feature determines what happens to worn and carried equipment when the druid transforms. A magic armour conversion must be written to interact with that feature explicitly.

Pathfinder 1E

Price: +3 bonus · Aura: moderate transmutation · CL: 9th.

The wearer preserves the armour’s armour bonus and enhancement bonus while using Wild Shape. The armour itself is not visible in the transformed form, but its protection remains.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, baleful polymorph.

D&D 3.5e

Price: +3 bonus · Aura: moderate transmutation · CL: 9th.

The 3.5e property preserves the armour or shield’s protective bonus while the wearer is in Wild Shape. Resolve the transformation and equipment interaction using the 3.5e Wild Shape rules rather than Pathfinder revisions.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, baleful polymorph.

Why Wild Armour Matters

The property exists to solve the armour problem created by transformation. A druid may gain a powerful new form while losing access to ordinary worn equipment; Wild armour preserves the defensive value of the enchanted armour even when the physical suit is no longer visible.

Run It at the Table

  • Pathfinder / 3.5e: the armour’s protective bonus remains while the wearer is using Wild Shape. Resolve every other transformation detail using that edition’s Wild Shape rules.
  • 5e: use the edition’s equipment-and-transformation rule first. A custom item must explicitly say that its benefit continues in the transformed form.
  • No automatic conversion: the +3 bonus-equivalent price and 3.x Wild Shape interaction have no direct 5e counterpart.
