Improved Heighten Spell — Magic Beyond the Ninth Circle
Masters of legendary spellcraft can force familiar enchantments into circles of power beyond the reach of ordinary wizards. The words remain known, but their force grows until even ancient wards struggle to withstand them.

Rules by Edition
D&D 2024 — Improved Heighten Spell
This epic feat is not part of the 2024 Basic Rules. A Sorcerer’s Heightened Spell feature changes the saving throws of one affected target and spends Sorcery Points; it does not increase effective spell level above nine. Spell slots above ninth level are not provided by this legacy feat in a 2024 character.
D&D 2014 — Improved Heighten Spell
The epic feat is not a standard D&D 2014 character option. A 2014 Sorcerer may use Heightened Spell to impose Disadvantage on one target’s first saving throw at a Sorcery Point cost, but that class feature does not give access to tenth-level spell slots. This older epic feat is not interchangeable with the modern Metamagic option.
Pathfinder 1e — Improved Heighten Spell
This page records the D&D 3.5e Epic SRD feat rather than an identified Pathfinder 1e core feat. Pathfinder’s Heighten Spell normally reaches ninth-level spells. Creating spell slots beyond that limit and adapting epic metamagic would require separate campaign rules; the older feat does not automatically add such capacity.
D&D 3.5e — Improved Heighten Spell (Epic)
Prerequisites: Heighten Spell and Spellcraft 20 ranks, together with eligibility to select an epic feat.
Benefit: Apply Heighten Spell as normal but without its usual ninth-level effective-spell-level ceiling. The heightened spell’s effective level determines spell-level-dependent effects, including its saving-throw DC, and the caster must have an available spell slot at the selected effective level.
Example: A caster with a tenth-level spell slot can heighten a third-level enchantment to tenth level. Its effective level for save-DC calculation increases by seven from its original third-level version, with all other modifiers unchanged. The feat alone does not create that tenth-level slot.
Epic spell capacity: A character can acquire high-level slots through separately applicable epic rules, such as Improved Spell Capacity. Improved Heighten Spell is a modification of an ordinary spell, not the separate Epic Spellcasting system.
Using Improved Heighten Spell
- Confirm that the character qualifies for epic feat selection and possesses Heighten Spell.
- Verify the 20-rank Spellcraft prerequisite and availability of the required higher spell slot.
- Choose the desired heightened effective level and spend the matching spell slot.
- Calculate all spell-level-dependent effects using the heightened level while retaining the spell’s other restrictions.
