10-Foot Pole

The 10-foot pole is one of the classic tools of cautious dungeon exploration: long enough to test something dangerous without immediately placing a hand, foot or face next to it.

What It Is For

  • Testing floors, flagstones, bridges and suspicious surfaces from a distance.
  • Prodding objects that may conceal traps, vermin or unstable debris.
  • Measuring rough depth in shallow water, pits or loose ground.
  • Pushing open a light door or moving a small object while keeping some distance.
  • Serving as an improvised support, marker or part of a simple camp arrangement.

Using It in a Dungeon

A pole does not automatically detect a trap. It gives the party a way to interact with a suspicious area while reducing direct exposure. Whether that helps depends on what the danger responds to: weight, pressure, heat, magic, sound, living creatures or something else entirely.

It is also awkward. Narrow passages, spiral stairs, crowds and dense woodland can make a long pole difficult to carry or turn. Characters may need to shorten their grip, pass it forward, leave it behind or accept that it is announcing their presence.

Improvised Uses

Adventurers use poles to lift hanging cloth, hold a rope away from a wall, check the ceiling above a doorway, retrieve floating objects, brace a light obstacle or mark a safe line through uncertain ground. These uses normally depend on common sense rather than special combat statistics.

Rules Guidance

Use the equipment statistics from the edition being played. A 10-foot pole is primarily exploration gear, not a replacement for a reach weapon. If a character tries to use it in combat, treat that as an improvised use unless a specific rule says otherwise.

Related Exploration

It is especially useful in dungeons, ruins and other environments where the party has reason to distrust the next few feet of floor.
