Boots of Elvenkind

A pair of enchanted elven boots

At a Glance

Item: Boots of Elvenkind · Type: Wondrous item (footwear) · 5e rarity: Uncommon · 5e attunement: Not required

Core benefit: Silent footsteps and Stealth Advantage in 5e; a +5 Acrobatics bonus in Pathfinder 1e; a +5 Move Silently bonus in D&D 3.5e.

Activation: Passive while worn, without charges. Legacy weight: 1 lb. (Pathfinder 1e and 3.5e). See the correct edition tab for exact limitations.

Soft boots worked with natural materials, sometimes with living leaves among their seams. Their tread scarcely troubles the ground, although the precise enchantment depends on the rules of the realm in which they are used.

Such boots are prized on narrow paths above ravines, along guarded streets and wherever carelessness gives a traveller away. A wearer must still consider armour, loose equipment, footprints, scent and the watchfulness of those nearby. Not every edition grants the same kind of protection.

Boots of Elvenkind Rules

D&D 5.5e / 2024

Wondrous Item, Uncommon
Attunement: Not required

While wearing the boots, your steps make no sound on any surface. You also have Advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks. In the 2024 version this benefit is not limited to checks based on moving silently.

Use: Continuous while worn; no command word, expendable charge or separate activation action is specified. The boots do not automatically confer the Invisible condition or suppress noises from weapons, armour or carried equipment.

D&D 5e / 2014

Wondrous item, uncommon
Attunement: Not required

The wearer’s footsteps are soundless on any surface. The wearer gains advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that rely on moving silently.

Use: Continuous while worn; no charges or activation action are listed. The Advantage does not automatically extend to every use of Stealth, such as concealing yourself while stationary without a movement-silence component.

Pathfinder 1e

Aura: Faint transmutation · CL: 5th · Slot: Feet · Price: 2,500 gp · Weight: 1 lb.

These supple boots aid agility across difficult surroundings. They grant their wearer a +5 competence bonus on Acrobatics checks.

Important: Pathfinder 1e does not give this named item the 3.5e Move Silently bonus or the 5e blanket soundless-step effect. Use its Acrobatics bonus when balancing, tumbling or performing other Acrobatics tasks as the rules allow.

Construction

Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item; creator must be an elf. Cost: 1,250 gp.

D&D 3.5e

Aura: Faint transmutation · CL: 5th · Body slot: Feet · Price: 2,500 gp · Weight: 1 lb.

While wearing these boots, the user gains a +5 competence bonus on Move Silently checks. The item’s 3.5e rules do not also give that bonus to Hide, Tumble or Balance.

Construction

Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item; creator must be an elf. Cost: 1,250 gp plus 100 XP; Time: 3 days under the standard 3.5e magic-item crafting rules.

What Changed Between Editions?

The 2024 boots give Advantage on all Dexterity (Stealth) checks, while the 2014 version restricts that Advantage to checks involving quiet movement. Their silent-footstep property remains. Pathfinder 1e instead grants a +5 competence bonus on Acrobatics, and D&D 3.5e grants the same numerical bonus on Move Silently. Only the 3.5e crafting rules above require XP expenditure.

On the Road

To cross a guarded courtyard, a scout can take advantage of quiet steps in either 5e edition, but an unsecured buckle or the scrape of a sword against stone may still betray them. The Acrobatics bonus in Pathfinder is valuable along precarious ledges and through threatened spaces, rather than as a guarantee of silence. In 3.5e the benefit is the narrower Move Silently skill bonus.

Elven craftsmen seldom fashion such boots by accident. Their comfortable soles, fine seams and light materials reveal skill even to a merchant who knows nothing of the enchantment. A bootmaker who recognises the stitching may know more about the last traveller to wear them.

Adventure Possibilities

  • The watch on the stairs: Guards hear nothing from the upper gallery, yet a dropped lantern exposes the intruder.
  • One boot missing: A river trader offers a single enchanted boot, claiming its companion was taken by a thief who fled across the roofs.
  • The maker’s mark: A village cobbler recognises a leaf-shaped stitch and asks whether the boots were obtained from their rightful owner.
