Devil, Nupperibo, Harbinger of the Vermin Cloud

Devil · Infernal Drone · Suppressed Metamorphosis

Nupperibo

A blind and mindless devil of Hell’s lowest ranks, shaped as a heaving mass of unfinished infernal flesh and driven by command rather than ambition. Ordinary Nupperibos are common infernal drones; specimens allowed to accumulate power become progressively rarer as they approach the metamorphosis that produces a Barregon.

What first appears to be a mound of unfinished flesh shuffles forward. It has neither proper eyes nor ears, yet turns towards living creatures with dreadful certainty.

Appearance & Infernal Nature

A Nupperibo stands roughly 5½ feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds, although its swollen proportions make ordinary measurements deceptive. Its body resembles a sagging mass of reddish, grey or pallid infernal flesh. A barely differentiated head and two heavy arms are often the only clearly humanoid features.

The face appears unfinished. Depressions or sealed folds occupy the places where ordinary eyes should be, while the ears are absent or buried beneath thick flesh. Its mouth may be little more than a compressed seam. Despite possessing no functional mundane sight or hearing, the creature has supernatural awareness of its immediate surroundings.

Heavy hands end in thick fingers or blunt claws. Short, powerful legs force the creature into a ponderous gait. A Nupperibo rarely appears alert or purposeful; it moves with the dull persistence of something given an instruction and lacking the imagination to question it.

Infernal, not folkloric. The Nupperibo described here is a devil native to Hell. It is not the Japanese Nuppeppō and is not treated as a cemetery yōkai, aberration, swamp creature or mundane predator.

Behaviour, Hierarchy & Purpose

Behaviour

Ordinary Nupperibos possess no independent intellect. They shuffle towards work, enemies or other assigned objectives with the same implacable persistence and continue until destroyed or given a different command by a devil capable of directing them.

Habitat

Nupperibos are native to Hell. They are encountered in labour gangs, fortress works, military musters, punishment complexes, siege camps and other places where infernal authorities require expendable bodies that need neither comfort nor initiative.

Modus Operandi

In battle a Nupperibo closes directly with a designated enemy and pummels it with its heavy limbs. Its blows leave corrosive infernal residue that continues to eat into the victim after impact. It devises no tactics of its own, although commanders may direct groups of Nupperibos as part of larger formations.

Infernal Status

Nupperibos occupy one of the lowest positions in infernal society and may be treated with even greater contempt than many lemures. Their lack of ambition makes them useful as labour and expendable troops within a civilisation otherwise saturated with rivalry, office and rank.

Suppressed Metamorphosis

The Nupperibo possesses a rare and dangerous capacity for uncontrolled development. Infernal authorities therefore have reason to contain, destroy, relocate or deliberately reshape specimens before they accumulate sufficient power to awaken.

Young and ordinary Nupperibos simply grow tougher as they accumulate racial Hit Dice. This first stage produces no dramatic transformation: the creature remains Medium, mindless, blind, deaf and obedient.

That changes at 10 Hit Dice. The Nupperibo develops genuine intellect, becomes capable of telepathic communication and begins attacking not only the body but the mind. At 12 Hit Dice vestigial wings emerge. At 14 Hit Dice the creature develops supernatural teleportation. If it reaches 15 Hit Dice, the entire Nupperibo form is replaced as it metamorphoses into a Barregon.

Infernal Rarity & Development

Rarity describes how often a particular developmental stage is encountered within Hell; it is not a separate game statistic. Ordinary Nupperibos may exist in large numbers, while the infernal authorities’ suppression of uncontrolled development makes advanced specimens increasingly unusual.

Development Rarity in Hell D&D 5.5e / 2024 PF1e / 3.5e Development
Standard Nupperibo Common 5 HD · CR 2 3–4 HD · CR 2 Ordinary mindless infernal drone.

Awakened Nupperibo Very Rare 10–11 HD · about CR 5 10–11 HD · about CR 6 Mindless ends; telepathy and Wisdom erosion emerge.
Winged Nupperibo Exceptional 12–13 HD · about CR 6 12–13 HD · about CR 7 Vestigial wings provide flight.
Ascendant Nupperibo Almost Unheard Of 14 HD · about CR 6–7 14 HD · about CR 8 At-will greater teleport; metamorphosis imminent.
Barregon Separate devil 15 HD threshold → Barregon 15 HD threshold → Barregon Replace the Nupperibo statistics with the Barregon statistics.
CR is not determined by Hit Dice alone. The values above are encounter-design targets. Whenever a Nupperibo is advanced, its finished attacks, defenses, special abilities and derived statistics should be checked against the intended Challenge Rating. Awakening, flight and other new abilities can justify a higher CR than additional Hit Dice alone.

Game Statistics

The SpiralWorlds Nupperibo is mechanically rooted in its D&D 3.5e form. The Pathfinder 1e and D&D 5.5e / 2024 versions convert that same creature rather than substituting a different later interpretation.

Traits

Infernal Receptivity. The Nupperibo can receive telepathic messages from Devils within 120 feet even though it possesses no telepathy of its own. It understands simple commands conveyed in this way but can’t reply telepathically until Metamorphosis grants it telepathy.

Magic Resistance. The Nupperibo has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Mindless. The Nupperibo possesses no independent reasoning and can’t formulate plans beyond immediate instinct or commands. Effects that read thoughts or alter memories have no effect on it.

Burning Strike. When the Nupperibo hits a creature with its Slam, corrosive infernal residue adheres to the target. At the start of the target’s next turn, it takes Acid damage equal to half the Bludgeoning damage actually dealt by that Slam, rounded down, minimum 1. The residue is then consumed. Each successful Slam leaves a separate residue.

Actions

Multiattack. The Nupperibo makes two Slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Attack Roll: +3, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d10 + 1) Bludgeoning damage, and Burning Strike applies.

Advancement & Metamorphosis

The standard 2024 Nupperibo begins with 5 Hit Dice. Advancement from 6–9 HD represents ordinary physical development; the creature remains Mindless and gains no metamorphic ability during this stage. Challenge Rating should rise only when its completed combat statistics warrant it.

HD Rarity Suggested CR Hit Points Mental Scores Development
5 Common 2 27 (5d8+5) Int 1, Wis 11, Cha 6 Standard Nupperibo. Mindless.
6 Uncommon 2 33 (6d8+6) Int 1, Wis 11, Cha 6 Ordinary advancement. Remains Mindless.
7 Uncommon 3 38 (7d8+7) Int 1, Wis 11, Cha 6 Developed Nupperibo. Increase its attack bonus, durability or damage as needed to support CR 3.
8 Rare 3 44 (8d8+8) Int 1, Wis 11, Cha 6 Greater Nupperibo. Still Mindless.
9 Rare 4 49 (9d8+9) Int 1, Wis 11, Cha 6 Final ordinary stage. Increase derived combat statistics as needed to support CR 4.
10 Very Rare 5 55 (10d8+10) Int 1, Wis 12, Cha 7 Awakening. Loses Mindless and gains Telepathy 60 ft. Its Intelligence score now represents genuine thought. Each Slam also reduces the target’s Wisdom score by 1, to a minimum of 1. These reductions are cumulative, and all Wisdom lost this way returns when the target finishes a Long Rest.
11 Very Rare 5 60 (11d8+11) Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 8 The awakened intellect continues to develop.
12 Exceptional 6 66 (12d8+12) Int 3, Wis 14, Cha 9 Grows vestigial wings and gains a Fly Speed of 20 ft.
13 Exceptional 6 71 (13d8+13) Int 4, Wis 15, Cha 10 The awakened intellect continues to develop.
14 Almost Unheard Of 6–7 77 (14d8+14) Int 5, Wis 16, Cha 11 Gains Greater Teleport (At Will). As a Magic action, the Nupperibo teleports itself and up to 50 pounds of objects it carries to a destination it knows on the same plane.
15 Transformation The Nupperibo completes its metamorphosis and becomes a Barregon (Gate Devil). Replace the Nupperibo stat block with the Barregon stat block.

2024 advancement note: Hit Dice above are a convenient SpiralWorlds advancement track rather than a rule that CR automatically follows HD. When using a 7 HD or stronger specimen, adjust attack bonus, damage and defenses to the suggested CR instead of merely adding Hit Points.

Using Nupperibos in a Campaign

At low levels, a gang of ordinary Nupperibos can represent the brutal machinery of Hell: mindless bodies directed through telepathic command and expended where intelligent devils would prefer not to risk themselves. Their slow movement and simple attacks make their immediate behaviour predictable, while Burning Strike makes prolonged close combat increasingly dangerous.

They may also serve as labourers, porters, excavation crews, siege workers, fortress servants and disposable attendants. Their lack of private ambition gives them a peculiar utility within an infernal civilisation where intelligent servants constantly calculate rank, advantage and opportunity.

Developed specimens between 6 and 9 Hit Dice are much less common. They remain mindless but are tougher than the innumerable ordinary drones, making them useful as heavy labourers, guards or shock troops.

An awakened Nupperibo is an entirely different encounter. Discovering a specimen with 10–14 Hit Dice means that something has interfered with the mechanisms normally used to suppress such development. Its existence may indicate a hidden Barregon enclave, a failed purge, an abandoned infernal installation or a deliberate attempt to cultivate another Gate Devil.

The important question is therefore not merely why the Nupperibo attacks, but who allowed it to survive long enough to begin thinking?
