Utukku stand between 11 and 14 feet tall, their hulking frames covered in dark brick-red scales that shimmer faintly like smoldering embers. Their heads resemble that of a great lion, but instead of a mane, long, sharp quills radiate outward like a crown of jagged spikes. Their faces glow with a golden-red hue, accentuated by piercing bright yellow eyes with unsettling catlike blue pupils. Massive white claws, curved and razor-sharp, cap their broad hands and feet, while black-and-white striped spines run along their shoulders and down their backs, lending them an otherworldly and fearsome presence.

Behavior:
Utukku are vicious, solitary predators driven by primal survival instincts and territorial dominance. They show no mercy to intruders—outsiders or even their own kin. Ruthless and relentless, they fiercely guard their lairs, relying on cunning and overwhelming physical might to subdue foes. Despite their intelligence and magical prowess, Utukku avoid complex fiendish politics, preferring direct confrontation and isolation.

Habitat:
Native to the chaotic and nightmarish ash deserts of the Abyss, Utukku dwell in savage wastelands scarred by volcanic fissures, boiling pits, and endless ash storms. Their lairs are heavily fortified natural caverns or crudely constructed pits that embody the brutal, anarchic nature of the Abyss. Though bound to this ever-shifting realm of chaos and evil, Utukku can occasionally plane shift to the Material Plane, favoring similarly hostile environments like barren deserts, volcanic craters, or blasted wastelands to establish temporary hunting grounds and collect treasure.

Modus Operandi:
Utukku engage foes primarily with savage claw and bite attacks, eschewing weapons for raw physical power. They supplement their brutal melee combat with spell-like abilities—summoning darkness, lightning, or fear to disorient enemies. Their signature tactic is to sow chaos and discord with a terrifying psychic compulsion that forces foes to argue and turn on one another. They attack indiscriminately, annihilating any beings that trespass into their domain.

Motivation:
Driven by primal hunger for dominance, survival, and the acquisition of treasure, Utukku seek to expand their influence through brutal conquest of territory. Their rare excursions to the Material Plane serve to amass riches and spread misery, reflecting their chaotic evil nature. Above all, Utukku crave power and destruction, embodying the relentless fury of Tartarus itself.

Traits

Magic Resistance. The Utukku has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. The Utukku’s weapon attacks are magical.

Iron Mind. The Utukku is immune to any effect that would sense its emotions or read its thoughts, as well as being immune to psychic damage and any effect that would cause it to be charmed or frightened by mind-affecting magic.


Actions

Multiattack. The Utukku makes two claw attacks and one bite attack.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) piercing damage.

Discord (Recharge 5–6). The Utukku emits a terrifying psychic pulse in a 60-foot radius. Each creature of the Utukku’s choice within range must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be overwhelmed by loud bickering and infighting for 1 minute. Affected creatures cannot take reactions and must use their action each turn to argue with a randomly chosen creature in range. If affected creatures have different alignments, there is a 50% chance they will attack each other. Creatures can repeat the saving throw at the end of their turns.


Spellcasting

The Utukku is a 10th-level caster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). The Utukku can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: comprehend languages, detect magic, detect evil and good, see invisibility
  • 3/day each: cause fear, darkness, lightning bolt (5th level, DC 15 Dexterity save), greater teleport (self only)
  • 1/day each: control weather, contagion (DC 18 Constitution save), polymorph (self only)

Legendary Actions

The Utukku can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Utukku regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Claw Attack. The Utukku makes one claw attack.
  • Terrifying Glare (Costs 2 Actions). The Utukku fixes its catlike blue eyes on one creature it can see within 30 feet. That creature must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn.

Tactics

  • The Utukku prefers to ambush intruders in its lair, using its darkness spell to shroud the battlefield and using see invisibility to counter invisible foes.
  • It initiates combat with Discord, sowing chaos and turning allies against each other before moving in with devastating claw and bite attacks.
  • If threatened or outnumbered, it will use greater teleport to reposition or escape.
  • It uses cause fear to disrupt foes and may unleash lightning bolt against clustered enemies.
  • The Utukku stays mobile, climbing walls and using its reach to keep enemies at bay, focusing on eliminating spellcasters or perceived leaders first.

Utukku are vicious predators of the planes that kill all outsiders who pass through their territory, including others of their kind. Their lairs in the great ash deserts of Tartarus always include impressive defenses, as each utukku must defend itself from all competitors. Utukku want no part of the intrigues of other fiends, and prey on any demons and devils they meet.

Very rarely, utukku are able to travel to the Material Plane for a time to gather more treasure. Its temporarily lair there will be a more hastily made lair, built in the caverns or pits of desolate regions, such as sandy deserts and volcanic areas. While on the Material Plane, they spread misery and suffering throughout local humanoid communities.

Utukku stand an average height of 12 feet tall, ranging from 11 to 14 feet tall, and weigh about 800 pounds.

Utukku speak their own language, but mostly communicate via telepathy.

Level Adjustment

COMBAT

Utukku always use their clawed hands to slash at foes rather than using weapons (though they are known to prize magical weapons as treasure). They also make good use of their magical powers in combat. These creatures are rather hardy, due to the harsh nature of their home plane. They always attack any extraplanar creatures on sight, unless outnumbered or overpowered.

Discord (Sp): Once per day, an utukku can cause all creatures within 60 feet to immediately fall to loud bickering and arguing, allowing them to take no other actions. If affected creatures are of different alignments, there is a 50% probability that they attack each other. The bickering lasts for 5d4 rounds, any fighting for 2d4 rounds. A successful Will save (DC 19) negates the effect. This is a mind-affecting, compulsion effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Caster level 18th. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Iron Mind (Ex): An utukku is immune to all magical and psionic mind-affecting divination effects, including telepathy.

Plane shift (Sp): Once per century, an utukku can leave Tartarus to plane shift itself into the Material Plane; it can remain on the Material Plane for one year, after which it automatically shifts back to its home plane, taking up to 4,000 pounds of material with it.
