Created with Midjourney

Appearance

A gargantuan whale of midnight-blue skin, shimmering faintly with bioluminescent streaks, its massive, smooth form conveys effortless power. Intelligent, serene eyes and graceful movements evoke awe and reverence in all who behold it.

Behaviour

Peaceful and contemplative, it glides through the ocean’s depths, singing entrancing melodies that mesmerize all within earshot. Often accompanied by dolphins or benevolent sea humanoids, it favors diplomacy and teaching over conflict.

Habitat

Dwelling in the deepest trenches, it surfaces only to breathe, traveling alone or in rare pods with retinues of tritons, merfolk, or dolphins.

Modus Operandi

It wields its entrancing songs and spell-like abilities to pacify, communicate, or educate. If provoked, its colossal tail and sonic magic make it a formidable opponent.

Motivation

The Deep Singer Whale is a custodian of oceanic wisdom, guiding allies and preserving the balance of its realms. Some believe it is a precursor or avatar of celestial whales, gathering knowledge in the material world before returning to the outer planes.

Entrancing Harmonies (1/Day). The whale sings a haunting melody. Each creature of its choice within 1,000 ft. that can hear it must succeed on a DC 27 Charisma saving throw or be charmed and incapacitated, compelled to listen for 1 minute. Creatures can repeat the save if they take damage.

Spellcasting. The Deep Singer Whale is a 12th-level bard. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 19, +11 to hit with spell attacks).

  • Cantrips (at will): detect magic, ghost sound, light, mage hand, message, prestidigitation
  • 1st level (7/day): charm person, ear-piercing scream, horn of pursuit, read weather, restful sleep, vanish
  • 2nd level (6/day): animal messenger, calm emotions, honeyed tongue, piercing shriek, tongues
  • 3rd level (5/day): arcane concordance, cure serious wounds, dispel magic, see invisibility

Actions

Multiattack. The whale makes one tail slam attack and can use its Entrancing Harmonies if available.

Tail Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +21 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 29 (2d8 + 14) bludgeoning damage.

Sonic Thrust (Recharge 5–6). The whale emits a concussive blast in a 60-ft. line, 10 ft. wide. Each creature in the line must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Legendary Actions

The Deep Singer Whale can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one option can be used at a time, at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Song of Calm. The whale sings briefly. All hostile creatures within 60 ft. must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom save or be calmed until the start of the whale’s next turn.
  • Tail Swipe. The whale makes one tail slam attack.
  • Echoing Call (Costs 2 Actions). The whale emits a resonant call. All enemies within 120 ft. must make a DC 19 Constitution save or be deafened and frightened until the end of their next turn.

Tactics

Deep Singer Whales prefer to avoid conflict, using song, charm, and magic to pacify or manipulate threats. If forced into combat, they combine tail attacks, sonic spells, and legendary actions to control the battlefield. Allies such as dolphins, merfolk, or tritons often assist in flanking or distracting enemies.

Lair Actions (Ocean Trench)

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the whale can invoke one of the following:

  • Summon currents, forcing creatures to succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be pushed 30 ft. and knocked prone.
  • Amplify its song, granting all allies within 60 ft. advantage on Wisdom saving throws until the start of its next turn.

Regional Effects (within 1 mile)

While the Deep Singer Whale dwells nearby, its legendary song subtly influences the surrounding waters:

  • Melancholy Echoes. Sailors and coastal observers hear faint, haunting melodies. Creatures relying on perception or concentration have disadvantage.
  • Attraction of Allies. Friendly sea creatures such as dolphins, tritons, or merfolk are more likely to approach, investigate, or act benevolently toward intruders.
  • Ambient Resonance. Minor magical energy from the whale’s song causes water currents and bioluminescence to shimmer, enhancing visibility or creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Only in the deepest oceans can one find the deep singers, a race of intelligent whales that sing with an entrancing harmony, and that are said to be the repositories of all the sea’s Wisdom. Deep singers can travel to any depth in the ocean without harm, but are air breathers nonetheless and can be found on the surface replenishing its air supply. Its haunting songs can be heard sometimes echoing among the waves, rising from the deeps, and are of such melancholy beauty that even the most hardened sailors find tears in their eyes.

Deep singer whales are often accompanied by a retinue of dolphins and intelligent, non-evil sea humanoids such as merfolk or tritons, who come to learn from the whales’ song, and bring them information of the world beyond.

Some believe that deep singer whales are the first stage in the evolution of the celestial whales that Swim in the oceans of the outer planes. Others believe that they are avatars of those beings, come to the world to increase their knowledge and experience before returning.
