Wyvern

Paolo Uccello (1397–1475), Wyvern
Paolo Uccello (1397–1475)

The wyvern is similar to a dragon, but it differs in that it has  only two legs, cannot breathe fire, and has a barbed tail.

Of the dragon-like creatures, wyverns are said to be the most feline, having a cat-like intelligence and temperament.  They were supposedly the most useful of all dragons to sorcerers, as they had  the unique ability to work easily with spells.

A distant cousin to the true dragons, the wyvern is a huge flying lizard with a poisonous stinger in  its tail.

A wyvern’s body is 15 feet  long, and dark brown to gray; half that length is tail. Its wingspan is about  20 feet. A wyvern weighs about one ton.

Wyverns speak Draconic,  but usually don’t bother with anything more elaborate than a loud hiss or a  deep-throated growl much like that of a bull alligator.

Combat

Wyverns are rather stupid but always aggressive: They attack nearly anything that isn’t obviously more powerful than themselves. A wyvern dives from the air, snatching the opponent with its talons and stinging it to death. A wyvern can slash with its talons only when making a Flyby Attack.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a wyvern must hit with its talons. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and stings.

Poison (Ex): Injury, Fortitude DC 17, initial and secondary damage 2d6 Constitution. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Skills: Wyverns have a +3 racial bonus on Spot checks.

Those adventurers who cannot yet afford a dragon mount often turn to the wyvern instead. Dangerous and not terribly bright, a wyvern makes an imposing and intimidating mount.

Eggs

For those beasts that are hatched from eggs, buying one as an egg is the cheapest means of procuring one. Additionally, being with the creature from the moment it hatches will help beast and owner bond. However, successfully raising an egg, keeping it viable until the creature within does hatch, is a difficult business, particularly with some
of the more exotic beasts which require unusual and specific circumstances to incubate. The Beast Within does offer incubation services to its customers, making it far more likely the dearly-bought egg will survive to hatch.

Young

Purchasing a creature when it is young and immature is more expensive than purchasing it when it is still in the egg, but also has two distinct advantages. The first and most obvious is that the creature has already successfully hatched, while purchasing an egg means gambling the creature will survive. The second is that the creature is old enough to be trained, meaning it is much closer to being able to serve the buyer as a mount, pack animal or guardian beast.

Training

Left untrained, a beast like a Wyvern is worse than useless, it is dangerous. A skilled trainer is able to teach the creature to serve a human master, though the necessary training regimen varies wildly from creature to creature. The price listed for training includes any potential healing needs the trainer may have in the course of working with the beast.
