Stone Golem

Stone Golem
My Images (midjourney.com)

Appearance: The Stone Golem stands as a towering sentinel, a colossus of ancient stone wrought into a humanoid form. Its massive frame, chiseled from solid granite, looms ominously, each stone slab meticulously sculpted to resemble muscles and sinews. Carved runes, glowing faintly with arcane energy, adorn its surface, imbuing it with an aura of ancient power. Its eyes, two glowing orbs of crystalline quartz, gleam with a steady, unwavering gaze, while its clenched fists, each the size of a boulder, crackle with latent energy.

Behavior: The Stone Golem is a creature of singular purpose, bound to its creator’s will with unyielding loyalty. It stands vigil over its designated domain with stoic resolve, its movements slow and deliberate as it surveys its surroundings with keen vigilance. Despite its seemingly impassive exterior, it harbors a fierce protective instinct, reacting with swift and brutal force to any perceived threat to its charge.

Habitat: Stone Golems are often found in ancient ruins, forgotten tombs, and other places of historical significance, where they serve as guardians of the treasures and secrets hidden within. They are equally at home in the depths of underground caverns or the crumbling remains of once-great cities, their silent vigil a testament to the passage of time.

Modus Operandi: The Stone Golem’s modus operandi is straightforward and direct: it stands guard, unmoving and unyielding, until its sensors detect the presence of intruders. When provoked, it unleashes its formidable strength and resilience, pummeling foes with crushing blows and weathering attacks with stoic indifference. Its methodical approach to combat, combined with its near-invulnerability to non-magical attacks, makes it a formidable opponent to all but the most prepared adventurers.

Motivation: The motivation of the Stone Golem is simple yet profound: to protect and preserve that which it has been tasked with guarding. Whether it be a sacred artifact, a hidden treasure, or the sanctity of an ancient tomb, the golem will stop at nothing to fulfill its duty, drawing upon its immense strength and indomitable will to repel all who would dare to trespass upon its domain.

Traits

  • Immutable Form: The golem is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.
  • Magic Resistance: The golem has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
  • Siege Monster: The golem deals double damage to objects and structures.

Actions

  • Multiattack: The golem makes two slam attacks.
  • Slam: Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage.
  • Slow (Recharge 5-6): The golem targets one or more creatures it can see within 10 feet of it. Each target must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw against this magic. On a failed save, a target can’t use reactions, its speed is halved, and it can’t make more than one attack on its turn. In addition, the target can take either an action or a bonus action on its turn, not both. These effects last for 1 minute. A target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Reactions

  • Magic Absorption: If the golem is targeted by a spell that requires an attack roll and the attack misses, or if the golem succeeds on a saving throw against the spell, the golem can use its reaction to absorb the spell’s energy, regaining hit points equal to the spell’s level × 10.

Legendary Actions

  • The golem can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The golem regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
    • Slam Attack: The golem makes one slam attack.
    • Magic Absorption (Costs 2 Actions): The golem uses its Magic Absorption reaction.
    • Stone Barrage (Costs 3 Actions): The golem releases a barrage of stones from its body in a 15-foot radius. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Tactics

  • In combat, a Stone Golem would utilize its immense strength and durability to engage foes head-on. It would prioritize attacking enemies with its powerful slam attacks, aiming to incapacitate or eliminate them quickly. If faced with magical threats, it would use its Magic Resistance and Magic Absorption to mitigate incoming spells. Additionally, it would employ its Slow ability to hinder particularly dangerous adversaries, giving itself an advantage in combat. Finally, if surrounded by multiple foes, it might unleash its Stone Barrage legendary action to deal significant damage to all nearby targets.

This golem has a humanoid body made from stone. A stone golem is 9 feet tall and weighs around 2,000 pounds. Its body is frequently stylized to suit its creator. For example, it might look like it is wearing armor, with a particular symbol carved on the breastplate, or have designs worked into the stone of its limbs.

Combat

Stone golems are formidable opponents, being physically powerful and difficult to harm.

Slow (Su) A stone golem can use a slow effect, as the spell, as a free action once every 2 rounds. The effect has a range of 10 feet and a duration of 7 rounds, requiring a DC 17 Will save to negate. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Immunity to Magic (Ex) A stone golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows Spell Resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.

  • A transmute rock to mud spell slows a stone golem (as the slow spell) for 2d6 rounds, with no saving throw, while transmute mud to rock heals all of its lost hit points.
  • A stone to flesh spell does not actually change the golem’s structure but negates its damage reduction and immunity to magic for 1 full round.

Construction

A stone golem’s body is chiseled from a single block of hard stone, such as granite, weighing at least 3,000 pounds. The stone must be of exceptional quality, and costs 5,000 gp. Assembling the body requires a DC 17 Craft (sculpting) check or a DC 17 Craft (stonemasonry) check.

CL 14th; Craft Construct, antimagic field, geas/quest, symbol of stunning, caster must be at least 14th level; Price 90,000 gp; Cost 50,000 gp + 3,400 XP.

Greater Stone Golem

A greater stone golem is 18 feet tall and weighs around 32,000 pounds. It resembles a typical stone golem in all respects, except that the Will save DC is 31 against its slow ability.

CL 14th; Craft Construct, antimagic field, geas/quest, symbol of stunning, caster must be at least 14th level; Price 196,000 gp; Cost 105,000 gp + 7,640 XP.
