Immunity

Protective magical barrier representing the Immunity spell

Immunity protects one creature from poison and disease for hours at a time. It is a preserved legacy d20 Witch spell rather than a spell that automatically carries into later editions.

Immunity — Pathfinder 1e

What Changed?

  • D&D 3.x Legacy: broad poison-and-disease immunity for hours.
  • Pathfinder 1e: no default Witch-list carryover is assumed.
  • 5.5e / 2024 and 5e / 2014: no official spell by this name; use each edition’s own protective magic.

Counterplay and Rulings

Because the legacy spell has a duration rather than being instantaneous, Dispel Magic can end it under the normal rules for that edition. Antimagic suppresses it while the target remains inside the antimagic effect.

The spell prevents new poison and disease effects while active; it does not retroactively restore Hit Points or ability damage already suffered before the spell was cast unless another rule says otherwise.

Using Immunity in Play

Immunity is strongest when the danger is known in advance: entering a plague quarter, confronting venomous monsters, handling poisoned relics or travelling through a contaminated environment.

Mythical Context

Athena’s aegis was a sign of divine protection, an emblem that made a god’s defence visible even in the midst of warfare. Immunity can be presented as an oath-like ward that sets the subject apart from the danger facing everyone else. See the British Museum’s Parthenon scene of Athena’s aegis.

Historical Context

Ancient Egyptian amulets named dangers and hostile powers in hopes of protection. Such physical objects demonstrate the historical desire to be shielded against harm, not the factual existence of an all-purpose immunity spell. See a British Museum protective amulet.
