As part of casting, you perform a coup de grace with a slashing weapon against a helpless adjacent living creature. If it dies, you consume its heart and gain the benefits of Death Knell.
The temporary Hit Points become 1d8 + 1 per Hit Die of the target, and the Strength bonus is profane. If the target survives the coup de grace, the spell is not lost; you can keep concentrating and try again while the spell remains active.
Edition Boundary
The spell’s coup-de-grace and alignment-tag mechanics are Pathfinder-specific. It is not automatically available to the 5.5e Witch.
