Pearza — Dark Minister of Research

Pearza 2

“There is an answer to every problem. The cost of finding it belongs to the specimen.”

Pearza 1
  • Name: Pearza
  • Identity: One individual pit fiend; Pearza is not established as an inherited office-name
  • Current Holder: A female pit fiend, arcanist, alchemist and infernal engineer
  • Office: Dark Minister of Research
  • Implementation Remit: Testing, refinement and controlled introduction of approved discoveries
  • Allegiance: The Dark Ministry under Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine
  • Seat: The Red Index laboratories within Malsheem in Nessus
  • Seal: An open book with red scalloped pages upon a black inverted triangle
  • Alignment: Lawful evil
  • Primary Concerns: Infernal magic, alchemy, planar engineering, biological adaptation, containment, weapons research and experimental countermeasures
  • Present Status: Active during the campaign present of 1454

Pearza does not command the Legions, direct Hell’s spies or maintain its soldiers’ loyalty. Her task is to give those offices better tools. She studies magic, living creatures, planar forces, diseases, materials, weapons, gates and captured technologies, then determines how their useful properties can be reproduced under infernal control.

She is quiet during meetings, impatient with ceremony and openly irritated by conclusions unsupported by observation. Pearza accepts doctrine only until a repeatable experiment disproves it. This intellectual independence makes her invaluable to the Dark Ministry and dangerous to every superior who prefers an obedient answer to a correct one.

Traits

Experimental Countermeasures. Pearza has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. When she succeeds on a saving throw against a spell, she identifies the spell and learns the caster’s spellcasting ability and spell save DC.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Pearza fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Weapons. Pearza’s weapon attacks are magical.

Malphas’s Favor. Pearza’s staff is a +3 magical weapon. Its enhancement bonus is included in her attack and damage rolls.

Master Researcher. Pearza recognises the broad nature of any visible spell, magic item, planar effect, disease, poison, construct or creature. This does not automatically reveal a unique creature’s name, private history or concealed abilities.

Regeneration. Pearza regains 15 hit points at the start of her turn if she has at least 1 hit point. This trait does not function at the start of her next turn if she takes radiant damage or damage from a silvered weapon.

Infernal Formulae. Pearza casts the following spells without material components, using Intelligence as her spellcasting ability. Her spell save DC is 26 and her spell attack modifier is +18.

Actions

Multiattack. Pearza makes three attacks using any combination of Malphas’s Favor, Claw, Bite and Tail. She can use Bite and Tail only once each during this Multiattack. She may replace one attack with Analyse Specimen when that action is available.

Malphas’s Favor. Melee Attack Roll: +19, reach 15 ft. Hit: 20 (2d8 + 11) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) necrotic damage.

The target must succeed on a DC 26 Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on Strength and Constitution checks and saving throws until the end of its next turn.

Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +16, reach 10 ft. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) slashing damage plus 10 (3d6) acid damage.

Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +16, reach 5 ft. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 17 (5d6) poison damage.

The target must succeed on a DC 24 Constitution saving throw or have the poisoned condition for 1 minute. While poisoned in this way, the target cannot regain hit points. The target repeats the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Tail. Melee Attack Roll: +16, reach 15 ft. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it has the grappled condition (escape DC 24). Until this grapple ends, the target also has the restrained condition. Pearza can grapple only one creature with her tail at a time.

Analyse Specimen (Recharge 4–6). Pearza studies one creature she can see within 120 feet. She learns its damage vulnerabilities, resistances and immunities, as well as its condition immunities.

Pearza chooses one damage resistance possessed by the creature. Until the end of her next turn, Pearza’s attacks and spells ignore that resistance. Analyse Specimen does not overcome damage immunity.

Deploy Prototype (Recharge 5–6). Pearza activates one of the following experimental devices:

  • Disjunction Pulse. Pearza chooses a point within 120 feet. Every creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centred on that point must make a DC 26 Intelligence saving throw, taking 55 (10d10) force damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, Pearza chooses one spell of 6th level or lower affecting the creature, and that spell ends.
  • Gravity Lock. A 20-foot cube centred on a point Pearza can see within 120 feet becomes crushingly heavy. Creatures in the cube must make a DC 26 Strength saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) force damage and having the restrained condition until the end of Pearza’s next turn on a failed save. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and is not restrained.
  • Mutagenic Furnace. Pearza releases alchemical flame in a 60-foot cone. Creatures in the cone must make a DC 26 Constitution saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) acid and fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that fails cannot regain hit points and has its speed halved until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions

Reposition the Experiment. Pearza teleports up to 40 feet to an unoccupied space she can see. One willing ally or one creature grappled by Pearza within 5 feet of her can teleport with her.

Reactions

Adaptive Countermeasure (3/Day). When Pearza takes acid, cold, force, lightning, necrotic, psychic, radiant or thunder damage, she reduces the triggering damage by 30 and gains resistance to that damage type until the start of her next turn.

Legendary Actions

Pearza can take three legendary actions, choosing from the options below. She uses one option at a time at the end of another creature’s turn and regains all spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.

Relocate. Pearza moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks or teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see.

Direct the Assistant. One allied devil, construct or laboratory creature within 120 feet can use its reaction to move up to its speed and make one attack.

Malphas’s Favor (Costs 2 Actions). Pearza makes one Malphas’s Favor attack.

Formula Discharge (Costs 2 Actions). One creature Pearza can see within 120 feet must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) force damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, the creature cannot teleport or benefit from invisibility until the end of its next turn.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20, Pearza uses one of the following effects while inside one of her principal laboratories:

Containment Lattice. Glowing lines form a 20-foot cube centred on a point Pearza can see within 120 feet. Creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or have the restrained condition until initiative count 20 of the following round.

Arcane Purge. Pearza chooses one creature, object or magical effect within 120 feet. Pearza chooses one spell of 7th level or lower affecting it, and that spell ends.

Specimen Breach. Claws, tendrils or half-formed creatures erupt from a containment chamber at a point within 120 feet. Hostile creatures within 20 feet of that point must make a DC 26 Strength saving throw, taking 31 (7d8) bludgeoning and slashing damage and falling prone on a failed save. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and remains standing.

Regional Effects

Within one mile of Pearza’s principal laboratories, unattended writing instruments make notes by themselves, recently cast spells leave faint geometric after-images and damaged objects sometimes display temporary, imperfect repairs.

Creatures that sleep in the area dream of being observed through glass. Alchemical mixtures occasionally separate into unknown additional substances.

If Pearza dies or permanently abandons the laboratories, these effects fade over 1d10 days. Uncontained experiments may remain.

Special Abilities

Adaptive Countermeasure (Su). Three times per day as an immediate action, when Pearza takes acid, cold, electricity, force, negative energy, positive energy or sonic damage, she reduces the triggering damage by 30. This reduction applies after any other resistance or immunity.

Analyse Specimen (Ex). As a swift action, Pearza studies one creature within 120 feet. She learns its damage reduction, energy resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities.

Until the end of her next turn, Pearza’s attacks ignore up to 20 points of one form of damage reduction or up to 30 points of one energy resistance possessed by that creature. Analyse Specimen does not overcome immunity.

Constrict (Ex). Pearza deals 2d8+15 points of bludgeoning damage whenever she succeeds at a combat manoeuvre check to maintain a grapple created by her tail slap.

Deploy Prototype (Su). As a standard action once every 1d4 rounds, Pearza releases one of the following effects. The saving throw DC is 38. Spell resistance does not apply.

  • Disjunction Pulse. Creatures in a 20-foot-radius burst within 120 feet take 20d6 force damage, with a Will save for half. On a failed save, Pearza chooses one spell of 6th level or lower affecting that creature, and the spell ends.
  • Gravity Lock. Creatures in a 20-foot cube within 120 feet take 15d6 force damage and become entangled and unable to leave their spaces for 1 round. A successful Reflex save halves the damage and negates the conditions.
  • Mutagenic Furnace. A 60-foot cone deals 10d6 acid damage and 10d6 fire damage. A successful Fortitude save halves the damage. A creature failing the save cannot regain hit points for 1 round.

Grab (Ex). When Pearza hits a Large or smaller creature with her tail slap, she can attempt a grapple combat manoeuvre check as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Master Researcher (Ex). Pearza identifies the school, caster level and broad function of a visible magical effect without making a check. She gains a +10 racial bonus on Appraise, Craft, Knowledge and Spellcraft checks involving magic, constructs, alchemy, planar phenomena or biological modification. These bonuses are included in her statistics.

Poison (Ex). Bite—injury; save Fortitude DC 38; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1d6 Constitution damage; cure 3 consecutive saves.

Quick Crafting (Ex). Pearza requires half the normal time to create non-epic magic items and constructs. She must still meet all other requirements and provide the normal raw materials.

Regeneration (Ex). Good-aligned silver weapons and spells with the good descriptor deal normal damage to Pearza.

Summon Devils (Sp). Once per day, Pearza can summon two ice devils, four barbed devils or one pit fiend. The summoned devils remain for 1 hour.

Withering Formula (Su). Once per round when Pearza hits a creature with Malphas’s Favor, the target must succeed on a DC 38 Fortitude save or take 1d4 points of Strength damage and 1d4 points of Constitution damage.

Combat

Pearza avoids unnecessary battle and teleports from encounters that offer no useful information. She fights fiercely when a laboratory, irreplaceable specimen or completed discovery is threatened.

She begins by analysing the most dangerous opponent, then separates enemies with force effects, gravity manipulation and containment magic. Pearza targets spellcasters, artificers and creatures displaying unfamiliar powers before ordinary warriors.

Adaptive Countermeasure (Su). Three times per day as an immediate action, when Pearza takes acid, cold, electricity, force, negative energy, positive energy or sonic damage, she reduces the triggering damage by 30. This reduction applies after other resistances and immunities.

Analyse Specimen (Ex). As a swift action, Pearza studies one creature within 120 feet. She learns its damage reduction, energy resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities.

Until the end of her next turn, Pearza ignores up to 20 points of one form of that creature’s damage reduction or up to 30 points of one energy resistance. Analyse Specimen does not overcome immunity.

Constrict (Ex). Pearza deals 2d8+16 points of bludgeoning damage with a successful grapple check against a creature held by her tail.

Deploy Prototype (Su). As a standard action once every 1d4 rounds, Pearza releases one of the following effects. The saving throw DC is 41. Spell resistance does not apply.

  • Disjunction Pulse. A 20-foot-radius burst within 120 feet deals 20d6 force damage, with a Will save for half. On a failed save, Pearza chooses one spell of 6th level or lower affecting the creature, and the spell ends.
  • Gravity Lock. A 20-foot cube within 120 feet deals 15d6 force damage. A failed Reflex save leaves the creature entangled and unable to leave its space for 1 round. A successful save halves the damage and negates the conditions.
  • Mutagenic Furnace. A 60-foot cone deals 10d6 acid damage and 10d6 fire damage. A Fortitude save halves the damage. A creature failing the save cannot regain hit points for 1 round.

Improved Grab (Ex). To use this ability, Pearza must hit a Large or smaller creature with her tail slap. She can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Infernal Formulae. Caster level 30th. Formula save DCs are Intelligence-based and equal to 21 + spell level.

Master Researcher (Ex). Pearza recognises the school, caster level and broad function of a visible magical effect without making a check. She gains a +10 racial bonus on Appraise, Craft, Knowledge and Spellcraft checks involving magic, constructs, alchemy, planar phenomena or biological modification. These bonuses are included in her statistics.

Poison (Ex). Injury, Fortitude DC 39; initial and secondary damage 1d8 Constitution.

Quick Crafting (Ex). Pearza requires half the normal time to create non-epic magic items and constructs. She must still meet all other requirements and provide the normal raw materials.

Regeneration (Ex). Pearza takes normal damage from good-aligned silver weapons and effects with the good descriptor.

Robe of the Black Index. Pearza’s robe grants a +4 deflection bonus to Armor Class and a +4 resistance bonus on saving throws. These bonuses are included in her statistics.

Summon Devils (Sp). Once per day, Pearza can automatically summon two ice devils, four barbed devils or one pit fiend.

Withering Formula (Su). Once per round when Pearza hits a creature with Malphas’s Favor, the target must succeed on a DC 41 Fortitude save or take 1d4 points of Strength damage and 1d4 points of Constitution damage.

Appearance

Pearza possesses the recognisable anatomy of a pit fiend but is smaller, leaner and less physically imposing than many others of her rank. She remains more than ten feet tall, with a scaled body, powerful wings, heavy horns, claws, fangs and a muscular tail.

Her red hide is marked by blackened stains, chemical burns, old cuts and pale geometric scars left by her own containment procedures. Sections of her scales have been replaced with fitted plates, runic clamps and experimental grafts that change as projects succeed or fail.

Pearza’s wings are often folded tightly against her back to keep them clear of instruments. Their membranes show repaired tears and rows of tiny notation marks. Her robes are expensive but poorly maintained, with scorched hems, ink stains and pockets filled with tools, samples and folded diagrams.

Her eyes distinguish her from other pit fiends. They normally appear dim, distracted and unsettled, as though focused upon an experiment no one else can see. When Pearza reaches a new conclusion, discovers a contradiction or encounters an unfamiliar phenomenon, they flare into intense red-gold light.

She pays little attention to conventional infernal grandeur. Visitors are more likely to find her wearing protective lenses, metal gauntlets and a stained work apron than ceremonial armour.

Dark Minister of Research

Pearza directs the Dark Ministry’s organised research apparatus. Her office collects unanswered questions, failed weapons, captured artefacts, unfamiliar creatures, battlefield reports and anomalous magical events from across Hell’s campaigns.

She assigns projects to laboratories, judges competing explanations and determines whether a discovery is reproducible. A singular miracle interests her; a method that can be repeated, manufactured and issued to thousands interests her far more.

The older phrase Research and Implementation remains an accurate description of the office’s function. Pearza does not merely discover new principles. Her ministry tests whether they can survive transport, mass production, hostile conditions, incompetent operators and enemy countermeasures.

Authority and Office Boundaries

Pearza may requisition materials, establish laboratories, commission prototypes, receive captured objects and creatures, conduct controlled trials and recommend infernal adoption of proven discoveries.

Dagos retains command of the Legions. Pearza can demonstrate a weapon and recommend deployment, but Dagos determines whether military formations adopt it, how it is issued and where it is used.

Corin retains intelligence, espionage and interrogation. Pearza may receive prisoners, remains or captured equipment after Corin’s office has extracted and assessed operational information. Any intelligence uncovered during experimentation must be reported back to him.

Zimimar assesses the effect of Pearza’s work upon morale, cohesion and obedience. A successful prototype that terrifies its operators, creates factional loyalty or causes unpredictable mutation may be rejected despite performing its intended task.

Pearza may advise Zaebos on the competence of researchers and officers, but she does not control infernal rank or succession.

Research Disciplines

Infernal Arcanology

Pearza studies the behaviour of spells, wards, curses, true names and planar laws under infernal conditions. Her ministry develops counterspells, containment circles, gate restraints and methods for identifying magical effects before they are fully activated.

She is particularly interested in magic that changes its function according to the plane, moral gravity, identity of the caster or legal status of the target.

Devil Physiology and Adaptation

The Ministry examines the bodies, transformations and inherited abilities of devils. Pearza seeks ways to make infernal soldiers resistant to unfamiliar environments, enemy magic, disease and weapons designed specifically to kill fiends.

Some alterations are temporary alchemical treatments. Others involve grafts, controlled metamorphosis or changes to the processes by which lesser devils develop into stronger forms.

Pearza’s experiments frequently succeed in the narrowest possible sense while producing unacceptable secondary effects. A devil may become immune to cold but unable to distinguish allies from frozen corpses. Another may gain flight but lose the instinct to land.

Weapons and Planar Engineering

Pearza’s engineers study siege devices, enchanted armour, infernal metals, portal machinery and weapons recovered from other planes. They do not simply copy foreign designs. They determine which principles can function reliably within Hell’s supply systems and military hierarchy.

This work overlaps with Malphas, whose expertise lies in fortifications, siegecraft and destructive construction. Their cooperation has produced valuable weapons and a long-running dispute over whether a device belongs to its inventor, its maker or the authority that paid for it.

Containment and Gatecraft

Some discoveries cannot safely be destroyed, transported or left where they were found. Pearza designs prisons for spells, objects, living creatures and planar breaches.

Every containment system is built with several independent methods of failure. Pearza assumes that any single lock, ward, oath or guard will eventually be defeated.

Countermeasure Archives

Each serious failure becomes a record. Pearza’s archives catalogue the weapon that did not fire, the ward that protected the wrong creature, the summoned servant that interpreted an order unexpectedly and the experiment that escaped because its creators misunderstood its needs.

Researchers who conceal failure are punished more severely than those whose experiments fail honestly. A hidden error cannot become a countermeasure.

The Red Index Laboratories

Pearza’s principal complex lies within Malsheem, the great citadel of Nessus from which Asmodeus governs Hell. The Red Index is not one laboratory but a network of sealed halls, workshops, vaults, testing chambers and archives connected through controlled portals.

The Index Hall

Every authorised project receives a red iron tablet recording its purpose, responsible researcher, permitted materials, known risks and conditions for termination. Tablets belonging to failed projects remain on display.

The Sealed Furnace

The Sealed Furnace tests metals, constructs, siege components and objects intended to survive magical heat, planar pressure or direct exposure to infernal fire. Its outer walls contain layers of material recovered from previous failures.

The Chamber of Failed Answers

This archive contains disproved theories, misleading observations and experiments that produced convincing but false results. Pearza considers it one of her most valuable collections.

The Specimen Vaults

The vaults hold living creatures, remains, diseases, cursed objects, unstable portals and substances that do not remain in one physical state. Each chamber has its own rules of access and containment.

No single map shows the whole vault complex. The routes are divided among several authorised officials so that one compromised researcher cannot release every specimen.

Research Doctrine

Pearza believes that everything observable can be studied and that every repeatable effect can eventually be controlled. She does not believe that everything should be used immediately.

Her restraint is practical rather than moral. An uncontrolled discovery is a threat to the researcher, the Ministry and Hell’s hierarchy. Pearza therefore insists upon documentation, repeat testing and a clear account of failure conditions.

She has no objection to cruel experimentation. Most creatures entrusted to her laboratories are prisoners, condemned devils, captured enemies or beings already judged expendable by an authorised infernal power.

That does not make every captive her property. Custody, sentence, contract, military authority and recognised status determine what may legally be done to a subject. Pearza regularly petitions for broader authority, but the research office alone does not grant ownership of a creature, its memories, identity or soul.

Relationships

Asmodeus

Asmodeus values Pearza because she produces results that lesser researchers cannot. He also understands that curiosity without restraint can become disobedience.

Pearza receives considerable freedom so long as her discoveries strengthen the infernal state and her experiments remain contained. She assumes that at least one official in every laboratory reports directly to the Lord of the Nine.

Dagos

Dagos wants reliable weapons, durable soldiers and countermeasures that work under battlefield conditions. He has little patience for a prototype that functions only when operated by its inventor.

Pearza considers Dagos an essential but unimaginative tester. Their arguments usually concern whether a discovery failed or whether its operators failed to understand the instructions.

Corin

Corin and Pearza frequently dispute custody of captured creatures and objects. Corin wants information preserved and evaluated. Pearza wants access before a specimen changes, decays or adapts to imprisonment.

Their offices maintain formal transfer records because each has accused the other of damaging valuable evidence.

Zimimar

Zimimar studies the institutional consequences of Pearza’s work. She has stopped several apparently successful projects because they damaged loyalty, generated fear of the Ministry or created dependence upon one researcher.

Pearza regards morale as a variable that should be measured rather than a reason to abandon discovery.

Zaebos

Pearza supplies technical assessments of researchers, artificers and officers responsible for experimental units. Zaebos may use those assessments when considering rank, but Pearza resists any attempt to promote administrators over competent investigators.

Malphas

Malphas is Pearza’s collaborator, rival and occasional supplier. He understands construction and siegecraft at a level few infernal engineers can equal. Pearza understands the underlying principles that allow his devices to function.

Malphas’s Favor, the staff Pearza carries, commemorates a period of unusually productive cooperation. It also allows Malphas to recognise when the staff is used, a feature Pearza has tried and failed to remove.

Role in the Blood War

Pearza’s office studies the creatures, weapons and environments of the Abyss in order to develop infernal advantages in the Blood War.

Her researchers analyse demonic regeneration, chaotic mutation, abyssal portals, captured weapons, battlefield diseases and the effects of prolonged exposure to hostile layers. They also examine failures within Hell’s own forces.

Dagos provides battlefield reports and damaged equipment. Corin provides intelligence concerning enemy capabilities. Zimimar reports how new methods affect infernal troops. Pearza converts those inputs into projects.

She is less interested in victory as a moral or political cause than in the opportunities the war creates. An endless conflict supplies problems, specimens, materials and permission to attempt solutions that would otherwise be forbidden.

Role in 1454

The mortal world of 1454 offers Pearza a rapidly changing field of study. Her agents watch gunsmiths, miners, alchemists, surgeons, apothecaries, shipwrights, printers, siege engineers and scholars who combine inherited knowledge with practical experiment.

Artillery interests her because small changes in casting, powder, elevation and ammunition can alter the balance between fortification and army. Printing interests her because knowledge can now be reproduced, standardised and distributed beyond the direct control of one master or court.

Plague survivors, battlefield surgeons and communities forced to improvise after catastrophe provide data on resistance, adaptation and institutional survival. Pearza’s agents purchase medical texts, collect damaged weapons, finance workshops and encourage dangerous experiments through apparently mortal patrons.

She does not intend to make Earth technologically modern. She seeks individual techniques, materials and ways of organising knowledge that can be transferred into infernal research.

Encountering Pearza

Pearza is most effective as the director of a dangerous location rather than a solitary monster waiting in a room. Her laboratories contain assistants, constructs, guards, contained specimens, unfinished devices and emergency systems whose operation may not be obvious to intruders.

She may hire adventurers to recover an object that cannot be approached safely by devils, investigate why a mortal invention works or capture a creature without damaging the quality she wishes to study.

Pearza bargains readily when an opponent possesses unique knowledge. She may suspend a battle to ask how an unfamiliar ability functions, offer safe passage in exchange for a demonstration or preserve a defeated enemy whose death would waste information.

Combat Tactics

Pearza avoids fair fights. She analyses the most unusual opponent, isolates targets with force and gravity effects and uses her laboratory to separate intruders from one another.

She prioritises spellcasters, artificers, constructs and creatures displaying unfamiliar transformations. Ordinary warriors are assigned to guards or restrained for later study.

Pearza teleports away from battles that threaten only her pride. She remains when an irreplaceable experiment, archive or specimen is endangered.

She is rarely encountered alone. Vulcas, Kappa, laboratory guards, constructs or escaped experiments should influence the battlefield.

Possessions and Assistants

Malphas’s Favor

Malphas’s Favor is a long black staff reinforced with red infernal metal and capped by a cage of rotating geometric blades. It functions as a weapon, measuring instrument and portable containment focus.

The staff can weaken a creature’s physical integrity, store observations and project several of Pearza’s formulae. It also maintains a concealed sympathetic connection to Malphas, allowing him to recognise its activation and occasionally send a brief message through it.

Robe of the Black Index

Pearza’s robe is woven with protective formulae copied from successful containment projects. Its patterns shift when exposed to unfamiliar magic and may provide the first warning that an experiment is behaving outside expected limits.

Vulcas

Vulcas is Pearza’s senior production overseer and quality-control officer, an experienced hellsmith responsible for turning laboratory prototypes into items that can be produced repeatedly.

He is less imaginative than Pearza and far more interested in tolerances, supply, maintenance and operator error. Many projects survive because Vulcas refuses to approve designs that work only under ideal conditions.

Kappa

Kappa is a clever imp who serves as Pearza’s familiar, messenger and unofficial archivist.

Kappa remembers where Pearza placed tools, which assistants falsified results and which apparently failed projects she continues to study in secret. The imp presents itself as a harmless servant while collecting leverage over every researcher in the complex.

Adventure Hooks

The Weapon That Learns

A prototype recovered from a battlefield changes after every attempt to destroy it. Pearza offers valuable information if the adventurers bring it to her intact. Corin warns that the device may already be transmitting everything it experiences.

The Missing Failure

A red iron tablet describing a failed experiment has been removed from the Chamber of Failed Answers. The project was officially abandoned, but several infernal fortresses now display the same impossible structural weakness.

Kappa’s Private Archive

Kappa offers to sell records proving that Pearza continued a forbidden experiment after Asmodeus ordered it terminated. The imp wants protection, Vulcas wants the records destroyed and Pearza wants to know whether the evidence is genuine before deciding whom to kill.

Surrender, Recognition and Consequences

Pearza is an intelligent, recognised infernal office-holder capable of negotiation, surrender, contract and legal obligation.

She accepts surrender when the defeated creature possesses knowledge, anatomy, magic or experience worth preserving. Her acceptance may lead to imprisonment, questioning, negotiated service or authorised experimentation rather than release.

Defeating Pearza does not grant ownership of her assistants, prisoners, research, memories or office. Laboratory records and specimens may also be subject to claims by Corin, Dagos, Asmodeus, another infernal ruler or the recognised owner from whom they were taken.

Destroying an active experiment can prevent catastrophe, erase irreplaceable knowledge, release a contained threat or create a dispute between several infernal authorities. Consequences depend upon what was destroyed, who held custody and what the experiment was preventing.

Historic and Gaming Context

Earlier fantasy role-playing sources present Pearza as a female pit fiend responsible for infernal research, development and implementation, particularly discoveries intended for use in the Blood War.

Some external continuities treat Pearza as an inherited ministerial name used by successive pit fiends. That succession has not been established in this campaign. The current Pearza is treated as one individual whose appointment date and predecessor remain unresolved.

The former page title also identified Pearza with Penemue. This identification has been removed. Pearza’s campaign identity derives from her infernal office and does not require a specifically Abrahamic name or biography.

The setting material and mechanics on this page are an original reconstruction. Earlier third-party prose, class builds, statistics and extensive spell catalogues are not reproduced.
