Wyrm Keif — Dragon-Blood Alchemical Drug

Wyrm keif is a rare, reddish refinement of ordinary keif made with dragon blood. It is extraordinarily expensive and dangerously addictive, but for a short time it can make a user much harder to kill and leaves a lingering resistance to sleep and paralysis.

5.5e / 2024, 5e / 2014 and 3.5e

No mechanics are presented here as official rules for these editions. Any conversion should preserve the drug’s defining qualities: a large but temporary reserve of vitality, lingering resistance associated with draconic blood and a severe addiction cost.

What Happens in Play?

Wyrm keif can turn an otherwise fragile combatant into someone capable of surviving a devastating encounter for an hour. Because the extra vitality is temporary, it also creates a dangerous deadline: surviving the battle does not mean the character is healthy when the effect ends.

Dragon Blood & Supply

The established substance is made by introducing a vial of dragon blood into ordinary keif during refinement. That makes supply inherently tied to dragons, dragonslayers, scavengers, alchemists and anyone willing to traffic in dragon remains. Its 500 gp PF1e price makes each dose valuable treasure.

Addiction & After-effects

Wyrm keif carries severe addiction. The apparent lack of the immediate penalties found in ordinary keif is therefore deceptive: continued access depends on an expensive and potentially dangerous supply of dragon blood.

Encounters & Adventure Use

  • A dragonslayer carries one dose for the moment a hunt goes catastrophically wrong.
  • A dead dragon has been secretly harvested not for scales but for blood destined for an alchemist.
  • A wealthy addict commissions adventurers to acquire another vial of dragon blood.
  • Elite guards seem impossibly difficult to kill until the party discovers their wyrm-keif supply.
  • A dragon learns that mortals are trading preparations made from the blood of its kin.
