Golden Keif — Alchemical Drug Ward
Golden keif is an unusual refinement of ordinary keif: still addictive and physically harmful, but prized because it can blunt some of the penalties caused by other drugs. That makes it both a commodity in its own right and a dangerous excuse for users to believe they can manage heavier substance use safely.

Edition Mechanics
Pathfinder 1e
Type: ingested or inhaled; Addiction: major; Fortitude: DC 18; Duration: 1 hour; Damage: 1 Constitution and 1 Wisdom.
The user gains a +1d2 alchemical bonus to Strength, takes a –2 penalty on saves against illusions and mind-affecting effects, and gains a +2 alchemical bonus on saving throws against drugs that are not types of keif, including saves to recover from addiction to non-keif drugs. If golden keif is taken while another drug imposes penalties on saves or skill checks, those penalties are reduced by 1, to a minimum penalty of –1.
5.5e / 2024, 5e / 2014 and 3.5e
No mechanics are presented here as official rules for these editions. A conversion should preserve the paradox: golden keif offers limited protection against other drugs while remaining addictive and harmful itself.
What Happens in Play?
Golden keif creates interesting choices because it looks like a solution to another drug problem. A character may use it to survive a dangerous exposure or reduce an existing impairment, only to acquire a different dependence in the process.
Addiction & After-effects
Its PF1e addiction is major despite its protective reputation. Constitution and Wisdom damage reinforce the central point: golden keif mitigates certain drug effects; it does not make drug use safe.
Alchemical Manufacture
The established PF1e recipe uses 2 units of gold, 3 of keif and 10 of urea, refined by sublimation with a retort. Craft (alchemy) DC 18; time 1 day. These are fantasy game mechanics rather than real-world preparation instructions.
Encounters & Adventure Use
- An adventuring company carries golden keif as an emergency countermeasure and discovers one member has begun using it routinely.
- A dealer markets it dishonestly as protection from all addictive substances.
- A prisoner has been dosed with several drugs and golden keif may reduce the immediate impairment at a cost.
- A wealthy client pays heavily for gold because an alchemist’s supply has run dry.
- A rival gang controls golden keif distribution and uses access to manipulate users of other substances.
