Divine Mechanics

Encounter role: Temporal controller / initiative and action economy. These are original campaign statistics for compatibility; each edition tab is standalone.

Chronos, Greater Primordial — Large Celestial, Lawful Neutral; suggested CR 36.

Armor Class 29 Hit Points 760
Speed 50 ft., fly 150 ft. (hover) Proficiency Bonus +10
STR 24 (+7) DEX 28 (+9)
CON 30 (+10) INT 30 (+10)
WIS 30 (+10) CHA 30 (+10)

Saving Throws Dex +19, Con +20, Int +20, Wis +20, Cha +20. Damage Resistances force, psychic, radiant. Condition Immunities charmed, frightened, paralyzed, slowed, stunned. Senses truesight 500 ft.

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Chronos fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Outside the Initiative. Chronos cannot be surprised. At the start of combat he chooses his initiative count after all other creatures have rolled.

Temporal Sovereignty. Chronos is immune to time stop, magical aging and effects that alter the number of turns he receives. He always knows when time within 1 mile has been rewound, accelerated or stopped.

Steal the Moment (Recharge 5–6). One creature within 180 feet makes a DC 28 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure it loses its next reaction and action; Chronos immediately gains one additional action that can be used only to move or use a divine feature. On a success the target loses only its reaction.

Mythic Trait — The Hour Returns. The first time Chronos reaches 0 hit points, he instead regains 380 hit points and resets his position, conditions and expended Legendary Resistances to their state at the start of the previous round; all other creatures remain as they are.

Greater Primordial; alignment LN. Suggested divine encounter CR 35. Domains: Knowledge, Law, Rune, Travel. Subdomains: Memory, Inevitable, Language, Exploration. Favoured weapon: quarterstaff.

Lord of Duration (Su). Chronos may extend or reduce the duration of any non-instantaneous spell within 120 feet by 1 round as an immediate action.

Borrowed Second (Su). Three times per day Chronos gains an additional standard action. This ability is not haste and does not stack with effects that grant extra actions.

Greater Primordial; Divine Rank 18; alignment LN. Portfolio: time, duration, cosmic cycles, sequence and generative chronology. Domains: Knowledge, Law, Travel. Favoured weapon: quarterstaff.

Appropriate salient divine abilities include Alter Reality, Divine Celerity, Divine Oracle, Supreme Initiative and Travel.

Temporal Dominion. Chronos is aware of every use of time-altering magic within his divine aura and may negate such an effect if its source has fewer divine ranks.

Chronos Is Not Cronus

Chronos belongs chiefly to Orphic and later cosmological traditions as the personification of Time. Cronus, by contrast, is the Titan son of Uranus and Gaia who overthrows his father and is later overthrown by Zeus.

Ancient and later writers sometimes encourage wordplay or conflation between the similar names. For play, keeping them separate produces a clearer cosmology: Cronus is a dynastic Titan king; Chronos is the primordial principle of time.

Worship in the Living World

Chronos is invoked by astronomers, historians, oath-keepers, chroniclers and people facing deadlines that cannot be escaped. His shrines use water clocks, star tables and circles marked with repeated dates rather than images of an elderly Titan with a sickle.

Time Across the Planes

Chronos has no single ordinary palace because every plane exists within duration. His strongest Hellenic associations run through the primordial cosmology surrounding Ananke, Aether and the emergence of ordered creation.

What Is Chronos Doing Now?

Across the world, certain bells are ringing one minute before they are struck. People who hear the early sound remember conversations that have not happened yet.

Chronos is tracing a sequence of stolen seconds. Someone is collecting tiny pieces of future time, too small to notice individually but large enough in aggregate to create an entire hidden day.

Domain Spells and Divine Gifts

1st: longstrider, sanctuary · 2nd: augury, blur · 3rd: haste, slow · 4th: divination, dimension door · 5th: temporal shunt, wall of force · 6th: contingency, true seeing · 7th: delayed blast fireball, plane shift · 8th: maze, mind blank · 9th: foresight, time stop.

Divine Relic — The Unfinished Hourglass

An original game relic containing sand that never fully falls. Once per long rest the bearer may reroll initiative after seeing all other initiative results. Once per week, when reduced to 0 hit points, the bearer instead returns to the space occupied at the start of the previous turn with 1 hit point.

Use Chronos Tonight

  • The Stolen Minute: an entire city loses the same sixty seconds each midnight.
  • The Bell Before the Blow: warning bells ring before disasters that have not yet begun.
  • The Hidden Day: a calendar contains a date nobody remembers living through.
  • Cronus’s Name: a cult deliberately merges Chronos and Cronus to awaken the wrong divine power.

Relationships

Ananke: necessity and time are closely linked in Orphic cosmological traditions.

Cronus: similar name, entirely different divine identity in this campaign.

Aether: upper air and cosmic radiance appear within Orphic generative cosmology beside time and necessity.

Zeus: rules the Olympian order within time rather than ruling Time itself.

Sources and Licensing

Chronos as primordial Time belongs chiefly to Orphic and later Hellenic cosmological traditions rather than Hesiod’s opening genealogy. The page deliberately separates Chronos from the Titan Cronus.

Mythological material is paraphrased from ancient literary traditions. Encounter statistics, relics, spell selections and adventure material are original fantasy-RPG adaptations. Edition names identify rules compatibility.
