Blood Sap — Crimson Swamp Stimulant

Blood sap is a deep-red syrup distilled from the crimson sap of a pale green vine native to swamplands. It offers a short burst of unnatural strength and agility, followed by hours of debilitating sluggishness. Habitual users are often betrayed by vividly red-stained lips and teeth.

5.5e / 2024, 5e / 2014 and 3.5e

No mechanics are presented here as official rules for these editions. Any conversion should preserve the substance’s identity: a tempting physical boost followed by a serious crash and addiction risk.

What Happens When You Take It?

The first phase makes the user stronger and quicker. When it ends, that advantage reverses sharply: movement and reactions become sluggish for hours. The red staining associated with repeated use can also turn the drug into physical evidence.

Addiction & After-effects

Blood sap carries moderate addiction in its PF1e rules and damages Constitution. The combination makes repeated use costly even when the initial boost seems tactically attractive.

Where Is It Found?

The source vine grows in swamplands, making marsh settlements, river traders, herbalists, alchemists and smugglers natural points of contact. A campaign can treat control of productive wetlands as part of the substance’s value without assuming every swamp supports the plant.

Buying or Finding It

At 150 gp per dose in PF1e, blood sap is valuable enough to appear as guarded stock, contraband or specialist alchemical merchandise rather than an everyday drink. Adventurers may encounter the raw crimson sap before they ever see the finished syrup.

Encounters & Adventure Use

  • A captured raider has red teeth and extraordinary strength, but the party has only minutes before the crash begins.
  • A swamp community is being forced to harvest a dangerous vine for an outside buyer.
  • A champion’s sudden physical prowess points toward concealed blood sap use.
  • A stolen shipment matters less than the map showing where the vine grows.
  • A suspect scrubs away every trace of the syrup but cannot hide the staining on their teeth.
