Worship and Guardianship in the Living World
Historical sources describe Waka as a moʻo goddess worshipped by female chiefs and as a guardian figure in Hawaiian romance. That is a more useful starting point than treating her as a generic animal deity.
In campaign play, Waka’s worship is expressed through protection: keeping a person hidden until the right time, guarding a chiefly line, testing the intentions of suitors and seekers, and preserving places whose safety depends on secrecy.
Waka and Paliuli
Waka appears in the Lāʻieikawai tradition as guardian of the young chiefly woman and is associated with Paliuli in Puna, Hawaiʻi. The story turns concealment into active guardianship: hidden dwellings, dreams, signs and supernatural protections all matter because someone vulnerable is being kept from the wrong people.
Sources also record multiple forms for Waka, including moʻo, human, spider and eel. Shapechanging therefore belongs to her guardian identity rather than being a decorative monster trait.
Pantheon Plane: Hawaiki and Ossa
Waka’s principal story identity remains Hawaiian and tied to Paliuli. Within the campaign’s wider cosmology, hidden paths from Paliuli can reach Hawaiki, while Ossa carries the sea-roads by which protected people and lineages can be moved beyond ordinary pursuit.
Hawaiki is a pantheon nexus, not a replacement for Paliuli or for the specific Hawaiian stories in which Waka appears.
What Is Waka Doing Now?
Rainbows have begun appearing over empty forest clearings in Puna, each one fixed in place regardless of sun or rain. Anyone approaching finds the clearing empty—but footprints lead away in four different animal forms.
At the same time, several young chiefs and heirs have disappeared from dangerous courts without signs of abduction. Their families receive only one message: Not yet.
Waka is hiding someone. The question is whether the danger is outside the sanctuary or already inside it.

Campaign Relic — Ka Lei o Paliuli
The Garland of Paliuli is an original game relic that changes scent and colour whenever someone under the bearer’s protection is in danger. Once per day it can hide one willing creature from divination for 24 hours. Once per week it opens a concealed path to a safe location the bearer has previously entered with permission.
Regional Effects
- Paths Mislead Pursuers. Hostile trackers repeatedly choose plausible but incorrect routes.
- Rainbows Mark Rank. A supernatural rainbow may reveal the presence of someone carrying hidden chiefly or divine significance.
- Guardians Change Shape. Harmless local animals may briefly take on unusual forms when warning protected people of danger.
Relationships
Lāʻieikawai: the chiefly young woman whose concealment and protection place Waka at the heart of one of Hawaiʻi’s great literary traditions.
Hina: another powerful Hawaiian female divine tradition, though the two should not be collapsed into the same role.
Pele: a major Hawaiian divine power whose moʻo-associated traditions inhabit some of the same supernatural landscape without making Waka part of Pele’s identity.

Sources and Licensing
Hawaiian mythological scholarship records Waka as a moʻo guardian deity worshipped by female chiefs and places her in stories as guardian of Paliuli and of chiefly figures. Ethnohistorical sources also record human, moʻo, spider and eel forms. The Lāʻieikawai tradition places Waka as guardian of the hidden chiefly girl in Paliuli.
