Kingdom of France

Kingdom of France

The Kingdom of France is one of the most powerful states in Europe and a great power since the Hundred Years’ War. Also a colonial power, with possessions around the world.

The capital of France is Paris, the country’s largest city and the main cultural and commercial center.

France was a de-centralised, feudal monarchy. In Brittany and Catalonia the authority of the French king was barely felt. The Kings of England laid claim to the French throne, resulting in a series of conflicts known as the Hundred Years’ War.

France is increasingly centralised; with the monarch expanding his absolute power complicated by historic and regional irregularities in taxation, legal, judicial, and ecclesiastic divisions, and local prerogatives.

France laid claim to large stretches of North America, known collectively as Viceroyalty of New France.

France is currently a major power in Europe with its victory in the Hundred Years’ War strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future empire building and absolute monarchy. France has experienced a vast cultural development and established the first steps of a worldwide colonial empire.

Cardinal Richelieu has made France a dominant cultural, political and military power in Europe.
