Cord of Binding

At a Glance

A Cord of Binding is a legacy magical cord constructed with personal material taken from the intended subject, typically hair or a piece of cloth. The sympathetic link is worked directly into the cord.

Legacy Rules

When the cord is made, the creator ties the personal items into it three times. The intended victim is then treated as though under a Geas.

Using the Cord

The personal material is part of the item’s construction rather than a general-purpose component. The exact consequences of the Geas effect come from the linked spell and the legacy rules being used at the table.

Edition Note

This is a legacy magic item and does not supply a separate 5e/2014 or 5.5e/2024 conversion. If adapted to another edition, use that edition’s comparable compulsion mechanics deliberately rather than carrying over assumptions silently.
