Strategic Location Settlement
A strategically located settlement controls a route that other people need: a bridge, mountain pass, deepwater harbour, river crossing, caravan junction or narrow stretch of coast.
Legacy Settlement Rules
Under the legacy Pathfinder settlement rules, Strategic Location increases Economy by 1 and increases Base Value by 10%.
Why the Location Matters
- Merchants prefer the route because alternatives are slower, riskier or more expensive.
- Armies and rulers care about whoever controls the settlement.
- Tolls, ferries, warehouses and escorts can become major sources of income.
Using It in Play
The location itself should generate conflict. A damaged bridge can stop trade, a rival power may try to seize the pass and smugglers may know routes that bypass official tolls.
Adventurers may be hired to hold the crossing, escort engineers, discover sabotage or negotiate with communities whose livelihoods depend on the route staying open.
