When Worlds Collide (1951)
44 Men and Women in Desperate Getaway Flight…To Escape Earth’s Destruction!
When Worlds Collide is a 1951 American Technicolor science fiction disaster film, produced by George Pal, directed by Rudolph Maté, and starring Richard Derr, Barbara Rush, Peter Hansen, and John Hoyt. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film is based on the 1933 science fiction novel of the same name, co-written by Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer.
The plot concerns the coming destruction of the Earth by a rogue star called Bellus and the desperate efforts to build a space ark to transport a group of men and women to Bellus’ single planet, Zyra.

Why It Matters
When Worlds Collide makes planetary catastrophe a problem of selection as much as engineering. Building an escape ship raises immediate questions about who is warned, who pays, who gets a seat and what values the survivors carry into another world.
Worldbuilding Inspiration
- A civilisation-ending threat with a fixed, visible deadline.
- An evacuation project that can save only a fraction of the population.
- Political conflict over who controls the new beginning.
