Snowball Swarm is a compact cold-damage area spell. It is not a grand blizzard, a weather-working, or a battlefield-wide winter curse. It is a precise evocation: a chosen point erupts with magically hardened snowballs that batter creatures and exposed objects in a tight burst.
The spell’s strength is its clarity. Enemies cluster too close, the caster marks the place, and winter arrives there for one violent heartbeat. The image may seem almost playful, but that is part of what makes the spell unsettling. A snowball should belong to courtyards, thawing fields, and children’s games. Under this spell, it becomes a disciplined magical volley, cold enough to injure and sudden enough to break a formation.

Choose a point you can see within range. A burst of enchanted snowballs erupts in a 10-foot-radius sphere centred on that point. Each creature in the area makes a Dexterity saving throw.
A creature takes 4d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Unsecured nonmagical objects in the area that are not being worn or carried can also take the damage if the DM decides the object could reasonably be harmed by freezing impact.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d6 for each spell slot level above 2.

Rules Clarifications and Edge Cases
- Burst placement matters: The spell affects the chosen area, not one creature directly. Line of effect, cover, corners, and blocked spaces matter normally.
- Small area: A 10-foot radius is useful but unforgiving. It rewards careful placement more than wide battlefield blasting.
- Objects: The original Pathfinder/3.5e version explicitly affects creatures and objects. In the 5.5e version, the DM decides whether unattended objects are fragile or exposed enough to matter.
- No lingering snowfield: The spell is instantaneous. It does not normally create difficult terrain, obscure vision, extinguish major fires, or leave a lasting icy surface.
- Cold resistance applies: Creatures resistant or immune to cold reduce or ignore the damage normally.
- Not weather control: Snowball Swarm creates a brief magical burst. It does not alter the local climate or summon a storm.
Good Combinations
- Grease: Knock enemies prone or make movement awkward, then punish a tight cluster with Snowball Swarm.
- Web: Restrain or delay several creatures close together so the small burst catches more targets.
- Fog Cloud: Force enemies to bunch up or move uncertainly through a confined area before dropping the burst at a known choke point.
- Sleet Storm: Use the larger storm to disrupt movement, then cast Snowball Swarm when enemies stumble into a tighter formation.
- Ray of Frost: Use the cantrip to harry a single fleeing target after Snowball Swarm has damaged the group.
Why This Spell Is Dangerous in the World
Snowball Swarm is dangerous because it makes winter portable. A caster does not need a frozen road, a mountain pass, or a storm cloud. They need only a visible point, a fragment of ice or pale stone, and the breath of an evocation.
That makes the spell especially alarming in places where snow should not be: summer courtyards, royal halls, ship decks, crowded markets, mine tunnels, desert shrines, and torchlit gatehouses. Its damage is modest beside greater magic, but its social effect can be immediate. Guards stagger. Horses rear. Firebrands gutter. Servants scream because snow has erupted in the middle of a feast.
At low levels, that is enough. The spell breaks rhythm, punishes clustered enemies, exposes a hidden caster’s intent, and turns a harmless winter image into a weapon.

Fire-marked raiders call themselves untouchable while they burn farms along the winter road. Their first defeat comes from an apprentice’s crude Snowball Swarm, and now both sides want the apprentice found.
Historical and Mythic Context
Snowball Swarm draws power from one of winter’s simplest images: snow gathered by hand and thrown. Snow itself is ordinary, but it is also one of the most visible signs of seasonal transformation. In natural terms, snow forms from ice crystals and snowflakes in the atmosphere; in magical terms, the spell compresses that winter substance into a sudden act of force.
