Transmutation · Size-Changing Magic

Enlarge/Reduce

Enlarge/Reduce changes a creature or object by one size category. The combined spell belongs to modern D&D; PF1e and D&D 3.5e instead split the effect into Enlarge Person and Reduce Person.

Enlarge/Reduce by Edition

5.5e / 2024

Level 2nd-level Transmutation
Classes Bard, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard
Casting Time Action
Range 30 feet
Components V, S, M (a pinch of powdered iron)
Duration Concentration, up to 1 minute

An unwilling creature can make a Constitution saving throw to resist. Enlarge increases size by one category, grants Advantage on Strength checks and saves, and adds 1d4 damage to attacks with enlarged weapons or Unarmed Strikes. Reduce decreases size by one category, imposes Disadvantage on Strength checks and saves, and subtracts 1d4 damage from reduced weapon or Unarmed Strike attacks, to a minimum of 1 damage.

Dropped gear returns to normal size immediately; thrown weapons and ammunition return to normal after they hit or miss.

5e / 2014

Level 2nd-level Transmutation
Base classes Sorcerer, Wizard
Casting Time 1 action
Range 30 feet
Components V, S, M (a pinch of powdered iron)
Duration Concentration, up to 1 minute

The 2014 spell doubles or halves the target’s dimensions and multiplies or divides its weight by eight. Enlarge grants Advantage on Strength checks and saves and adds 1d4 weapon damage; Reduce imposes Disadvantage and subtracts 1d4 weapon damage. An unwilling creature can make a Constitution save to resist.

Pathfinder 1e

There is no single PF1e spell named Enlarge/Reduce. Use the separate legacy spells Enlarge Person and Reduce Person. They are 1st-level transmutations aimed at humanoids and use legacy size modifiers rather than the modern Advantage/Disadvantage model.

D&D 3.5e

D&D 3.5e also separates the effect into Enlarge Person and Reduce Person. Do not import the modern combined spell’s class list or 1d4 damage rule into those legacy spells.

What Changed?

  • 2024 puts the spell on the Bard and Druid core lists as well as Sorcerer and Wizard.
  • 2024 drops the old exact height/weight multipliers and explicitly covers Unarmed Strikes.
  • PF1e and 3.5e do not use this combined spell at all; they use separate Person spells.
