Artemis’ Blessing steadies the ranged attacks of the caster’s companions and sharpens their ability to follow a trail. In its original d20 rules, allies within a 50-foot burst gain +1 on ranged attacks and +2 on tracking checks; even characters without Track may attempt to follow a trail. The spell belongs to a legacy source, not an official 2024 or Pathfinder spell.

Rules by Edition

Artemis’ Blessing — 2024

Status: no official spell of this name in SRD 5.2.1. A 2024 campaign can draw inspiration from its hunter-goddess theme, but the legacy +1 and +2 insight bonuses, Track feat, 50-foot burst and spell resistance do not form a published fifth-edition spell.

Artemis’ Blessing — 2014

Status: this named spell does not appear in the 2014 core rules. Use official 2014 spells and class features independently rather than assigning the historical bonus numbers to a fifth-edition ranger.

Artemis’ Blessing — Pathfinder 1e

Status: this third-party d20 spell is not on a default Pathfinder spell list. Pathfinder uses its own tracking, feat and bonus-stacking rules; copying these numerical benefits would be an explicit GM-approved adaptation.

Each ally receives a +1 insight bonus on ranged attack rolls and a +2 insight bonus on Survival checks to track. While affected, a creature without the Track feat may attempt a Survival check as though possessing that feat.

Under the source’s special interaction, this blessing counters the effects of Bane on ranged attacks only; it does not eliminate other effects of Bane or undo unrelated conditions.

What Changed Between Editions?

The spell’s numbers, 50-foot burst, insight-bonus type and Track-feat benefit come from Relics & Rituals: Olympus. Modern D&D has no direct spell conversion, while Pathfinder uses a different framework for class access and tracking. Treat the original as a distinct legacy option.

Using Artemis’ Blessing in Play

Cast before the party spreads out to scout or begins a ranged fight. A group of archers guarding a woodland road gains a modest advantage at range, but the real value may come after the skirmish, when the party follows fleeing raiders into the trees. The source explicitly helps characters who do not have the Track feat participate in the pursuit.

In a hunt for a creature that circles its pursuers through a marsh, the magic does not reveal a perfect path. It improves the survivors’ ability to interpret broken reeds, disturbed mud and partial footprints under the original Survival and tracking rules.

Counterplay and GM Rulings

  • Allies and area: determine who is within the caster’s 50-foot burst when it is cast; do not automatically extend it across the whole battlefield.
  • Ranged attacks only: the +1 insight bonus does not improve melee attacks or spell attack rolls unless the original rules separately support that use.
  • Tracking: the +2 insight bonus applies to Survival checks made to follow tracks, not every Survival check the adventurers make.
  • Bane: only the penalty to ranged attacks is countered; other effects remain.
  • Harmless spell resistance: apply the target edition’s own harmless-spell procedure, not a modern fifth-edition saving throw invented for this entry.

Related Spells and Powers

Athena’s Blessing offers a comparable melee-focused effect; Bane is a specific countered spell; and Artemis provides the mythic identity behind this tradition.

Mythical Context

Artemis protects wild animals and commands the bow. Her blessing can be portrayed as the poise of a hunter who follows tracks patiently and never treats the forest as an empty battlefield. The tradition joins martial skill with responsibility toward the creatures of the land. See the Metropolitan Museum’s Artemis and a Deer.

Historical Context

A third-century BCE Cypriot limestone statue shows Artemis carrying a quiver and accompanied by a fawn, and the museum connects her cult with a sanctuary of Apollo at Pyla. This is evidence for worship and iconography, not a historically measurable bonus to an archer’s attacks. See the Metropolitan Museum’s Cypriot Artemis statue.
