Arrowspark

Female fantasy archer with bow representing arrows turned into supernatural light by Arrowspark
Arrows touched together in the ritual shine with a light drawn from Apollo or Artemis.

Arrowspark grants up to fifty arrows the ability to pass through nonliving armour as brilliant-energy ammunition. Its unusual exception is decisive: these arrows cannot damage constructs or objects, but can harm undead. The ritual is an eighth-level Archery-domain spell from a legacy d20 source, not an official modern-edition spell.

Spell Rules by Edition

Arrowspark — D&D 2024

Status: no official Arrowspark spell in SRD 5.2.1. The older rules for armour bonuses, Archery domains and nonliving matter are not 2024 D&D mechanics. Use a separately approved adaptation if the game requires this effect.

Arrowspark — D&D 2014

Status: no 2014 core spell by this name. An Archer’s weapon attack and the current edition’s armour system are distinct from a 3.x brilliant-energy projectile; do not convert one into the other silently.

Arrowspark — Pathfinder 1e

Status: not a default Pathfinder spell. Pathfinder has its own Brilliant Energy weapon property, but that property normally cannot harm undead. The special undead exception belongs solely to this third-party spell.

Arrows touched together during the ritual acquire the properties of brilliant-energy ammunition: they ignore nonliving matter, so armour and shield bonuses to Armour Class, including magic enhancements on that armour, do not protect against them. Other defences such as Dexterity, deflection, dodge and natural armour are not automatically negated.

Special exception: Arrowspark arrows cannot harm objects or constructs, but can harm undead despite the usual brilliant-energy restriction. They glow faintly at rest and become bolts of sunlight or moonlight when shot, reflecting devotion to Apollo or Artemis.

What Changed Between Editions?

The original Archery 8 spell is third-party legacy d20 material. Neither fifth-edition ruleset nor standard Pathfinder spell lists publish this same spell. Pathfinder’s own brilliant-energy weapon rule provides a comparison, not an automatic conversion. Even ordinary 3.5e brilliant-energy weapons cannot harm undead, so keep Arrowspark’s printed exception visible.

Arrowspark in Play

Prepare the bundle before danger if ten uninterrupted minutes are available. The arrows must touch during casting, making a quiver or laid-out bundle a sensible ritual arrangement. Against an armoured knight or an incorporeal-looking foe, use the actual target type and the original d20 defence calculations rather than assuming the arrow always hits.

Arrowspark is especially valuable in an adventure threatened by undead soldiers wearing heavy armour. Their undead nature does not make them immune to the special Arrowspark arrows, but a construct guarding a vault remains unharmed by them. An enemy could also exhaust the limited enchanted ammunition through decoys or force the archer to use ordinary arrows.

Counterplay and Rulings

  • Preparation: enchant no more than fifty projectiles, which must all touch each other when the spell is cast.
  • Protection: ignore armour and shield bonuses under the legacy brilliant-energy rule, but retain other applicable Armour Class components.
  • Unusual targets: undead can be harmed by this spell; constructs and objects cannot.
  • No infinite ammunition: casting the spell does not create arrows or replace expended projectiles.
  • Duration and dispelling: the enchanted projectiles last one hour per caster level unless ended under the original dispelling rules. A 2024 concentration requirement is not part of the source.

Arrowfire adds fire damage to normal shots; Arrowlink delivers touch spells through arrows; Undead may be especially vulnerable to Arrowspark’s exception. See also the Archery domain.

Mythical Context

The thunderbolt is Zeus’s emblem, while Apollo and Artemis wield arrows powerful enough to punish those who offend the gods. In this spell, an ordinary arrow becomes a shaft of supernatural light: its ability to pass through armour belongs to fantasy, not to ancient archery. See the Metropolitan Museum’s Hellenistic relief showing Zeus with his thunderbolt and Apollo.

Historical Context

Greek and Cypriot bronze arrowheads survive from the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, showing sophisticated forms of real projectiles. Their metal points could pierce or strike physical targets; they did not pass through armour or become living light. See the Metropolitan Museum’s Classical bronze arrowhead.

Target: Up to fifty projectiles, all of which must be in contact with each other at the time of casting.
Duration: 1 hour/level

Arrows enchanted by arrowspark ignore nonliving matter; armor bonuses to AC (including any enhancement bonuses to that armor) do not count against them. Arrows under the influence of arrowspark cannot harm constructs or objects, although they can harm undead (unlike other brilliant energy weapons).

The arrows glow faintly, and their heads glitter and spark as if they were white-hot. When launched from the bow, an arrow affected by arrowspark transforms into a bolt of pure sunlight or moonlight, depending on whether you are a worshipper of Apollo or Artemis.
