Animal Camouflage — Beast Disguise Spell
Illusion (Glamer) · Animal deception · Third-party legacy spell
A lone traveller walks into a wolf pack without the pack raising an alarm. To those wolves the traveller looks and feels like one of their own; to the bandits watching from the ridge, the traveller has not changed at all.

Among the Beasts
When casting, name one exact species rather than a broad family: wolf instead of canine, or lion instead of cat. Only creatures of that chosen species perceive the caster as a familiar fellow member. Other creatures observe the caster normally. The spell is a magical deception of perception, not a physical transformation or a power to command the pack.
The magic suits reconnaissance, a rescue in a guarded woodland or a tense encounter with territorial beasts. It is not free passage through every monster’s lair: the creatures may still challenge a perceived rival for territory, food or mates. Outsiders looking on may notice the caster behaving strangely around animals.
Rules by Edition
Animal Camouflage — D&D 2024
No official spell with this name.
Published social alternative: Speak with Animals
Level: 1 Divination (Speak with Animals)
Casting Time: Action or Ritual
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: 10 minutes
Speak with Animals lets you comprehend and verbally communicate with Beasts and use the applicable Influence action options with them. It does not give you the shape, smell or seeming of a wolf, and it does not make the pack regard you as one of its own.
Example: A ranger questions a wolf about strangers near its den, but must still win its cooperation. A worg or other magical beast is not necessarily a Beast covered by the spell.
Edition boundary: The original Animal Camouflage effect of seeming familiar to animal species is not recreated here. A humanoid-looking disguise from Disguise Self is also not automatically a four-legged animal shape. Use an expressly approved custom spell if this campaign needs the older effect.
Animal Camouflage — D&D 2014
No official spell with this name.
Published social alternative: Speak with Animals
Level: 1st-level Divination (Speak with Animals)
Casting Time: 1 action (Ritual available)
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: 10 minutes
Speak with Animals grants comprehension and speech with beasts. You may try to persuade an animal to offer a small favour at the DM’s discretion; speaking does not compel trust or prevent hostility. It does not disguise your form.
Example: A druid asks a fox which trail the hunters took. The fox may answer from its experience, but it still knows the druid is not another fox.
Edition boundary: The original Animal Camouflage effect of seeming familiar to animal species is not recreated here. A humanoid-looking disguise from Disguise Self is also not automatically a four-legged animal shape. Use an expressly approved custom spell if this campaign needs the older effect.
Animal Camouflage — Pathfinder 1e
Unofficial Pathfinder 1e adaptation of a third-party d20 spell.
School: Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Druid 3, Ranger 2, Sorcerer/Wizard 3
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Components: V, S, DF/M
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 minutes/caster level
Saving Throw: Not stated in the retained source entry
Spell Resistance: Not stated in the retained source entry
Arcane material: A tuft of animal fur for arcane casting
When casting, name one exact species rather than a broad family: wolf instead of canine, or lion instead of cat. Only creatures of that chosen species perceive the caster as a familiar fellow member. Other creatures observe the caster normally. The spell is a magical deception of perception, not a physical transformation or a power to command the pack.
Example: A seventh-level druid selects wolves and enters a den. The wolves perceive a familiar wolf for 70 minutes, but a lurking worg or human hunter sees the druid’s real appearance. A rival wolf may still challenge the apparent newcomer.
Limit: The chosen species must be an animal or magical beast with 5 Hit Dice or fewer; it is not a broad creature-type disguise. This source-derived effect requires GM approval and is not a Paizo spell.
Animal Camouflage — D&D 3.5e
Third-party d20 spell from Relics & Rituals: Olympus, not core D&D 3.5e.

Casting Time: 1 standard action
Components: V, S, DF/M
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 minutes/caster level

At the Table
A seventh-level druid selects wolves and enters a den. The wolves perceive a familiar wolf for 70 minutes, but a lurking worg or human hunter sees the druid’s real appearance. A rival wolf may still challenge the apparent newcomer.
Ask which creatures are present, whether their species and Hit Dice qualify, and what they would naturally do with a familiar animal. Their treatment of the caster may be merely neutral, competitive or suspicious; the spell promises recognition, not obedience.
Adventure Hooks
The Wolf Who Does Not Belong
The pack tolerates the disguised ranger, but its wounded leader demands a hunt. Refusing may expose the stranger long before the party finds the missing child.
The Stag at the Spring
The keeper of a forbidden grove must get close to an animal guardian to learn its patrol. The spell secures an approach but cannot persuade the beast to abandon its duty.
Related Magic
See Greater Animal Camouflage for the wider, longer-lasting deception affecting many different animal species simultaneously. For fifth-edition communication without deception, use Speak with Animals. A normal Disguise Self illusion cannot simply make a biped physically or visually into a quadrupedal beast.
Source and Attribution
The 2004 third-party source is Relics & Rituals: Olympus, published by Sword & Sorcery Studios / White Wolf Publishing, with authors W. Jason Peck, Aaron Rosenberg, Christina Stiles and contributors. The older site records this spell from that work; no claim is made that this spell is part of the official D&D 3.5e SRD, Pathfinder 1e, D&D 2014 or D&D 2024. The source’s exact licence status is not independently confirmed, so the original effects are restated in new explanatory prose rather than reproduced as a long source extract.
