Combat, Hit Points
Hit Points
Hit points measure how much injury a creature can withstand. What happens at 0 hit points depends on the rules used for the encounter.
D&D 5.5e / 2024. At 0 Hit Points, a character falls Unconscious unless killed outright. They make Death Saving Throws: three successes make them Stable; three failures mean death. Remaining damage equal to or greater than their Hit Point maximum causes instant death. 2024 damage and healing rules.
D&D 5e / 2014. A character reduced to 0 hit points falls unconscious unless killed outright. At the start of each turn at 0, they make a death saving throw; three successes mean stability and three failures mean death. Excess damage at least equal to their hit point maximum causes instant death. 2014 combat rules.
Pathfinder 1e. At exactly 0 hit points, a character is disabled. At negative hit points, they are unconscious and dying until they stabilise or recover. They die when their negative hit point total equals or exceeds their Constitution score. Pathfinder combat rules.
D&D 3.5e. At exactly 0 hit points, a character is disabled. From −1 to −9 hit points they are unconscious and dying; at −10 or lower they are dead. This is a fixed threshold, not a threshold based on Constitution. 3.5e injury and death rules.
