The city gates belong to the council. The next fields may belong to the abbot. Travellers crossing Kempten’s short political frontier find that one seal opens a gate while the same seal can make a farmer an outlaw.
What Is Happening Right Now?
After the election of Gerwig II von Sulmetingen as prince-abbot, the adjoining abbey is defending its rural claims against rivals, including interests at Augsburg. The city council wants its merchants left out of that feud. An abbey steward insists that three warehouses inside the walls still owe ancient dues. A guild official threatens to confiscate his ledger rather than pay.
Places and People
The River Gate and Iller Wharves
Wagon guards, ferry pilots and freight handlers move grain, timber, wool and iron. The river rises quickly after rain in the Alpine foothills. A boat with the wrong cargo stamp risks seizure by both jurisdictions.
The Council House and Guild Streets
Magistrates dispense civic justice while weavers, metalworkers and merchants exchange work in courtyards and workshops. Civic autonomy does not settle every dispute: the abbey’s remaining rents and privileges still reach into the town.
Across the Abbey Boundary
Visit the neighbouring Kempten Prince-Abbacy for archives, ritual sanctuary and Gerwig’s court. Its sacred officers serve several gods, but an obligation accepted inside the precinct does not automatically bind the city’s watch.
Services, Dangers and Adventure Hooks
Caravans can find smiths, stables, river pilots, local inns, copying services and sponsored healing. Large magical favours are negotiated with their keepers rather than offered on a public price list.
- One Bridge, Two Tolls: secure passage for a caravan when both the city and abbey demand payment under apparently valid charters.
- The Missing Guildmaster: a respected weaver vanishes before an arbitration hearing; his workshop contains a copy of the abbey’s disputed rent roll.
- Riverside Sanctuary: a runaway tenant seeks protection in the city. Is the person escaping unlawful bondage, fleeing a genuine crime, or carrying news of a planned raid?
Travel, Law and Sources
The city is a distinct imperial community, not the prince-abbot’s capital. Its early privileges are real; the famous Great Purchase and peasants’ rising occur much later in ordinary history and are not past events here. The city’s historical account and the Bavarian Historical Lexicon inform the rivalry; divine rites and immediate disputes are campaign developments. The city’s dedicated hero and campaign map remain outstanding.
